DS aged 7 has to go to school in national costume on Friday (we live overseas).

What could he wear for English national dress? Something easy to fabricate please as not only am I bandaged up from fingertips to armpit on one side, but also our shops are few and limited.

Shell suit

Lucycat · 12/05/2008 13:14

erm a tricky one!

well you could start with the Anglo Saxons and move on therought the ages - Romans...

or could you get a bowler hat and suit type thing, with the obligatory umbrella?

or as a Morris Dancer?

EffiePerine · 12/05/2008 13:16

tricky

Morris?
Pearly king/queen (hard to do at short notice)

EffiePerine · 12/05/2008 13:17

which region are you from originally?

regional dress more common than national

e.g. smock and clogs

Bridie3 · 12/05/2008 13:17

Morris dancer
I like the bowler hats, too.
what about one of those yokel-type cream smocks which farmers used (apparently) to wear?

Has he got a knight costume? St George might be nice. Or Arthur.

misselizabethbennett · 12/05/2008 13:17

Pearly King? Get sewing now and if you don't sleep you could be done by Friday

LadyOfWaffle · 12/05/2008 13:18

Bowler hat/suit etc. and cane is very English.

fiodyl · 12/05/2008 13:24

I think a St George/crusade style knight would do. Try a white pillow case with red crosses painted on either side worn over grey long sleeved t shirt and grey trousers. Acsessorise with sword shield and helmet.

MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 13:25

morris is easy

white shirt with rolled up sleeves
dark trous tucked into socks
school shoes
loops of ribbon crossed on chest, pin toegther with badge in the middle (cut out a card lion or dragon or something and tape to safety pin)

couple of hankies and a big stick
I'd forgo the bells

or a knigth ocstume a very good idea

throckenholt · 12/05/2008 13:27

jeans and a t-shirt

barnstaple · 12/05/2008 13:29

Sackcloth and ashes
Woad?

anorak · 12/05/2008 13:39

Thanks all!

Sewing a problem with hand bandaged up.

Even something as simple as a grey long-sleeved shirt may not be available in shops! Please keep the ideas coming.

Football strip? Wax jacket that smells of wet dog?

fiodyl · 12/05/2008 14:27

well the grey shirt was just to kinda replicate metal armour any greyish coloured jumper would do.
Or you could try wrapping tin foil round his arms- maybe a little uncomfortable/hot though!

Other ideas- Policeman- but mabe hard to find/make the hat;or some kind of English king?

Blu · 12/05/2008 14:29

graon on your behalf, Anorak.

Where do they think up these naff and silly ideas?

MNo sensible suggestions.

But I do like 'woad'

sakurarose39 · 12/05/2008 15:00

Mr. Bean-like, suit and tie...
with briefcase, for a city-gent look?
would he hate Little Lord Fauntleroy (britches -trousers tucked into socks, and white frilly shirt?)
or "Oliver" - cloth cap, tweed...clogs?

groan indeed! good luck...

anorak · 16/05/2008 19:02

I have put a pic of DS all ponced up as a Morris man on my profile for you. All I had to buy was ribbons and the costume only too 10 minutes to put together. Thanks ladies!
