Hi,

These are my 5 year old son's reading assessment results. He's in reception.

I'm very uncertain as to what these levels mean. There are no further notes.

Thank you

That is confusing with no other info, but I think it means he’s above where they’d expect him to be - particularly given the smiley face! Looks like it’s from the Read Write Inc phonics scheme, and he’s on G (green level). If you google it you can get more info.

Ahh, see that's what I didn't realise. G is for green - that helps a lot, I'll give it a google. Thank you for helping!

Yes this is from the Read Write Inc program. The average Reception child will be in Ditty group at this stage of the year which is what the D arrow is. However, your child is in green group which is two groups ahead. He will be assessed every half term at school and will go up the groups as and when the assessments say he is ready. The groups go Set a, set b, set c, ditty, red, green, purple, pink, orange, yellow, blue, grey and comprehension.

Oh I see! Thank you for explaining! I tried to google but your explanation is very concise so thanks for the help!

This is RWI and he is in green group which means he’ll get the early learning goal for reading/phonics as this is the end of reception goal.
I’m a TA doing these assessments and find that progress often slows from green. That’s primarily because there’s an additional assessment on the ability to “speedy read” so I’d suggest lots of reading the same book. Check the green words over and over until they’re not sounding out anymore, they can use “fred in your head” for the assessment but it should be fast (same pace as an adult sounding out in their head) or it won’t be classed as able to speedy read. Hope that helps.

Wow thank you so much for sharing this information.

I will continue reading. He has been given two books last week, it's usually just the one. I'll be sure to read with him everyday.

He doesn't need to sound out any red words that they've learned so far.

I'll pay attention to the green.

Again thank you! ☺️
