Online Maths help

Hi all. My year 6 dd has always struggled with maths and I feel like school have been as helpful and have done as much as they can. We have tried a tutor but she hates maths so much it was a disaster.

I was wondering if there are any online maths platforms that we can do together for an hour or so a week to give her a bit of help? I've had a google and two that came up were IXL and Maths Whizz (which has some terrible reviews)!

So really just seeing if anyone has any recommendations? My maths is awful so I can't help her by myself!

You could try Sumdog. It doesn’t teach but plenty of opportunities to practice

I have found Brilliant.org very good. It shows how things work and why. I think you can do a free trial.

imho (and extensive experience) kids don't really learn a great deal from doing maths on a screen.

The apps look great and present themselves very well but I've yet to see them actually help a pupil beyond getting them to jump through gamified hoops.

We've tried out IXL and struggled with it. Beestar so far has been really helpful. Great worksheets for math and reading. Kids love it.

Try lots of practical maths.eg games rather than on line. Use and model vocabulary and operations - can you get 1 more fork etc. Model and get them to use fingers to show how many. Make sure they understand bigger/small number. Really check they understand number bondss first to 5 then up to 10. Numicon is useful and unifix/ dice. I also like numberblocks if you want something to watch.

Look on Twinkl and TEs resources for resources and ideas. Many are free.
As a pp said practical fun ideas would work best rather than sitting down for an hour. Baking, weighing etc would help, playing shop.
Multisensory activities e.g.playdough with number cutters, number based dough mats, number or shape hunt in the garden, skittles, number target board etc.

You’ll find plenty of ideas on places like Twinkl and Worksheetzone, and lots of them are free. And like others have said, the most effective things at this age are the practical, playful activities — not sitting them down with worksheets for an hour.
Baking is brilliant because it naturally brings in counting, measuring, and following steps. Playing “shops” helps with numbers, turn-taking, and simple money concepts. Anything multisensory works really well too: playdough with number cutters, dough mats, a number or shape hunt in the garden, skittles, or even a simple target board with numbers to aim for.
There are also some American sites with great hands-on, practical ideas if you want a few more things to try.

Year 6 maths is hard and online apps will not provide the targeted teaching required. Some of the suggestions from previous posters seem to have misread the OP. The child is age 10/11 not 6. I’d try a different tutor who can fill the gaps in a fun way in a safe, one on one environment. Maths learning requires secure basic concepts such as place value, number bonds and times tables. Without these in place the child will get more and more confused as the content becomes more complex.
