Free reading suggestions - Year 2

Hi all. I’m hoping to get some book suggestions for my daughter to read. She is in year 2 and doing well with her reading so far. She is currently on ‘topaz’ book band (if that means anything to anyone?!) and with the reading scheme the school follows the next step would be free reading where she will have free range to choose her own books.

In general, we love the books the school set her. They are at the right level of challenging and have such a variety which my daughter enjoys (this week she’s had a non-fiction book about volcanoes and a superhero comic style book which she has loved equally).

I guess I’m looking for a bit of advice for what we do next. When I take my daughter to the library we find it hard to choose suitable books - she always chooses the ‘rainbow magic’ books or something with a princess on the cover, which she thinks she likes, but she doesn’t enjoy them anywhere near as much at the school books. I really want her to keep her love of reading and I think she’ll need a bit more guidance of suitable books but I have no idea where to start! She enjoys Roald Dahl books but I think some of the words and the style of language would be slightly too tricky for her to read herself at the moment.

Any ideas gratefully received (and I will see if the teachers have any suggestions too). Thanks

My DDs loved The Naughtiest Unicorn series, and the Mr Penguin books. Toto the Ninja Cat was also a big hit.

Y2 DS2 loves the Worst Witch series; they are fun but the vocabulary is quite sophisticated (in a good way; he can read it but I need to explain some of the meanings).

Thanks so much for the suggestions so far - everything looks great! I really didn’t know where to start and I’m feeling a lot more positive for our next library trip now 🙂

My dd used to do that too. Choose Rainbow Fairy books and then be bored senseless because they are so bad.

She got really into these Usbourne books because they are so well illustrated and that broke the cycle.
