Primary school in year transfer.

Hi all, please! can somebody help me out. Lol
Confused parent here.

It's been 11 working days so far and I've heard nothing!

I spoke to my current sons school headteacher and as far as she's concerned she's fine with him moving on, but has heard nothing.

Does this mean the new school has rejected my sons application? Surely LA would have contacted them by now if it was successful?

And also if there is spaces why would an application be rejected?

I'm pretty sure there are spaces (been told), son has never been excluded, no issues as far as I'm aware.

Have you called the school and asked?

Where I live the schools do not deal with the admissions process. LA admissions team does this. So unless the LA contact me with a yes or no I can't do much.

As your son has not been excluded, the school cannot reject an application if there is a space available.

Yeah, I'm aware that if he's never been excluded and there's space he can join the school. At this rate admissions team is too busy to deal with my sons application, so I just have to wait it out.

I will definitely hear from them in the coming week so fingers crossed.

I've just applied for my two this week and heard back in a couple of days. This is Worcestershire CC and I applied online. I had an email back with a letter attached saying they'd got their places but for me to contact the new school to arrange starting and tell their old school they're leaving. The email would have been easy to miss as it looked like spam.

I just checked spam and nope nothing, I reckon 11 working days is a bad sign. I've never had to wait this long before.

My sons current school are aware im tryinb to transfer him, we are going on good terms but I did explain the reasons and the head agreed. But she says she's not heard anything so can't really say.

On my council site online it does say the headteachers are given the chance to talk during at the beginning of the process which I feel is absolutely awkward lol so for my sons head to say she's not heard anything is a bad sign.

I'm not sure how the whole process is done but I'm just assuming the places are gone to somebody else and I'm looking around for another local school for my kid.

Glad you got yours :D it's always a relief when you get your choice isn't it!

@BeNewShark maybe give them a call tomorrow and it might put your mind at rest. It could just be someone has been on leave or they're busy as the closing date for September admissions was only a couple of weeks ago. Fingers crossed it something simple and you'll get your answer soon.

Thank you, I can only email admissions as they don't have a number to call. The last time I emailed I was ignored both times. I have another school in mind which is also close by also so I will get onto that one this week.
I will still keep my fingers crossed anyway thank you and I will update on here whatever the outcome x

@BeNewShark how frustrating. Maybe you can get in touch through the main council phone number? Just a thought. Someone might ring you back if you can't find a number for the department through Google. Fingers crossed x

I contacted the school and asked if they have my application or have heard anything, and sadly was told between the beginning of the month to now the spaces have all gone despite being told there is a space. I am okay with this however I feel like the whole process was a let down.

Surely if there are no spaces there should be an automatic email going out to parents who apply? I applied in good faith assuming there is a space having been told this, but I should have got an email within 10 days at least with the rejection. I'm just fuming that 12 days in and no automatic rejection email like how difficult is it?

I will apply for the other schools I have in mind but I will first contact the school to speak with them about the process, what to expect as the school I'm going to apply for is a voluntary aided school so I'm assuming the head teacher will recieve the application and then I will need to meet crcriteria According to the website I still need go apply via LA which I'm dreading now lol but the school will handle the application (I think)

I will ask of spaces too and if there is a waiting list etc.

Will update on when I get the rejection letter/email just to close this up nicely. And it may help others who are stressing about timing.

VA schools are usually their own admissions authority. I would have a look round and speak to the head.

NormallyAwkward · 03/02/2025 16:06

@BeNewShark that's awful! Can you appeal? I hope it all works out for you.

I have a meeting with the head next week for the school I'm not looking at, and I feel at peace with it.

Just to end this thread with a conclusion I have an outcome via email. I had to write in to complain to admissions by email and asked for the complaint procedure and was followed with a phone call and the lady explained the "class is full."

I've also been told that a good way to find out if the application has been rejected is to log into the online portal, if you see the "appeal" button that means you've been rejected and may now appeal. If you don't see the appeal sign it means it's still in progress.

Truth is I saw that appeal sign on the second day I applied, which was a day after the lady at the school told me there are space available. So my application was rejected quite quickly. And to anyone wondering what the status "a place has been requested at this school" means, it means a place has been refused at the school.

Hope this helps another worrying parent in the future

No, it's fine. I wouldn't appeal as I'm a firm believer in "if it's meant to be" and anyways appeals are always rigged in favour of the school. The only way to win one of those is is prove they got it wrong/made a mistake. And to give a valid reason why my kid should go there...

I2 days for a rejection though? I can't wait to leave this borough lmao it's a joke

I have my eyes on two schools close by which are promising. :) 😀 this time I'm going to ask about spaces first and then apply to both.

@BeNewShark They are not rigged but schools cannot keep taking dc when classrooms are full based on the PAN and space available. If there are spaces elsewhere it’s reasonable for an appeal to fail unless ECHP naming the school.

This is not true. Spaces being available at other schools is not a valid reason for an appeal to fail.

@BeNewShark you don't mention whether your child is in years R-2 or Year 3+? What is the PAN for the year group you are applying to?

TizerorFizz · 03/02/2025 21:21

@Lougle well yes but dc can go somewhere else. I know the appeal is only about the appeal school but if it fails, it’s not the end of the world to go elsewhere. Not an unreasonable outcome.

Lougle · 03/02/2025 22:18

But not one that the panel should be considering. The appeal is simply whether the school in question is full, how full, and in the case of non-ICS appeals, whether the prejudice that another child joining the school causes, outweighs the prejudice to the child by being refused a place.
