DD1 is going in reception in Sep. School have sent me this list:

? School sweatshirt or cardigan
? Pale blue school polo shirt
? Grey trousers, pinafore dress or skirt
? Blue gingham or striped dress for girls in summer
? Shoes ? sturdy shoes or sandals are routine wear; trainers and
open-toed sandals are not an acceptable part of school uniform.
They will also need a PE bag containing:
? School PE shirt
? White PE shorts
? Plimsolls ? elasticated front/Velcro fastening
? Painting apron (preferably an adult shirt/blouse/T-Shirt)

School sweatshirts, cardigans, polo-shirts, PE T-shirts, caps, book
bags and PE bags are available from the school office.

So, how many sweatshirts, polo shirts etc is a reasonable amount to get? I dont want too few but I dont want too many either?

Ok, glad about the proper shirts. Hopefully I can get away without ironing anything?

Might swap one pinafore for trousers. She gets very hot though and would happily wander around naked most of the time if she got the chance

Sounds good, but maybe check whether girls tend to wear the cardigan or the sweatshirt? I got DD1 one of each and now she tells me that "sweatshirts are for boys" and won't wear it!

I bought 4 pairs of trousers and 6 polos and sweatshirts - one for everyday and a spare. I dont wash daily so need enough to last a week.

Saying that 3 have come home with pen on in the last fortnight so I am hoping the sun stays and he wont need new ones as the size he has now is getting a little small but the next size up is enormous. Might just get a couple of plain ones to last till the end of term.

Sounds like you'll be well prepared.

Once your dd has started school you'll become familiar with the morning school gates greeting of "have you got my dd/ds's sweatshirt/polo shirt ?" and "did you know your dd/ds's sweatshirt/polo shirt is on the lost property shelf, I saw it whilst searching for my own dd/ds's ?"

Cotton polo shirts may need an iron run over them in the summer months when they are on display but polyester blend ones don't crease as badly.

Get velcro plimsols

5 polo shirts should be enough (although I have about 8)
I also have about 7 jumpers
about 4 or 5 pairs of trousers

PS It also depends how messy an eater your child is, and whether they have sandwiches or hot lunches (which come with things like custard, gravy and the kids always rush them)

Ds1 eats like a strimmer, so he has a LOTof tops!

Friendlypizzaeater · 09/05/2008 14:51

I have a complete change for every day as DS is a messy eater ! Check clothes for a proper fir as well - bought DS trousers from Sainsburys (excellent still going strong) & Asda (just wont stay up - skinny son !!) so had to hunt for some more within a few days of him starting school ! Bought him logo'd tops & polo shirts - horrified to find black marker pen on his polo shirts straight away and can't shift it for nothing ... Our school sweatshirts have a really tight neck so they struggle to get them off so swopped to v neck jumpers from Matalan.

FunkyGlassSlipper · 09/05/2008 15:16

@ eating like a strimmer.

I have changed to 2 cardigans and 1 sweatshirt and have decided to delay the summer dresses as she will be part-time for a while and is only allowed to wear them until half term anyway.

She is built like a stick so may go for just pinafores instead of skirts too.

With girls who might have a choice of dress, skirt, pinafore or trousers & cardi or jumper etc, it might be worth not buying too much for when they start and see what they prefer to wear. My daughter hated wearing her cardi, it turned out all her friends wore jumpers. She also liked to wear a pinafore, as thats what her new best friend wore.

A lot of the high street stores (especially M&S - 3 for 2) tend to do good deals on uniform around June / early July.

Popsp - the school receptionist told me that the girls tend to wear pinafores and cardis, so I ended up getting 2 cardis and 1 sweatshirt. I expect DD will want to wear what the other girls are wearing but I may be wrong!!

Saw lovely pinafores on BHS sale website but all sold out so going to keep an eye on them.

califrau - sorry, but lol at lack of snow for lesson teaching. That happened to me last year with sunhats.
