UK School in year transfer

Hi, I made a huge mistake taking my son out of his school year 2 and then putting him in a school that he really dislike and I am not keen on either. I rushed as we moved and tike was ticking... however I didn't think through the choice of school properly. I really did rush.

Anyway I've applied for my child to go back to his old school as we've moved back. Will my child be refused because the headteacher was annoyed that we left? Can she refuse despite there being spaces?

I've checked parent portal so far and the status says: A Place Has Been Requested At This School. How long does it take? What do the status updates all mean? Help?

No, obviously not. They will have an admission criteria they will follow, each child is a pot of money so if there are spaces to fill they usually like them to be filled.

She likely didn't give a toss that you moved, why do you think she'd care so much?

Of course not - if there is a place, they would need a very good reason to not offer it to your son and even then you can appeal

Me and the head are family members cousins to be exact! And yes she was annoyed more so that I was leaving the area in general. But that's the personal side of things.

She knows I'm back and really doesn't mind me being son back BUT she's made it clear it's not up to her it depends on waiting list, spaces and criteria as its a faith school. But this is just me panicking, and shes not speaking to me about it because obviously its her job and shes not crossing the line. I am no longer in the faith but based on my kid going there previously I would have thought it's easy to get back in. Turns out there is a waiting list and I'm panicking that's all.

And no need to be so harsh, clearly in my eyes she did give a toss although she says it's will be nice to have him back i just don't believe her. She rolls her eyes at me all the time. Just because she's the head doesn't mean she should be rude. Feels like my sons school life is in her hands and shes loving it

It won't be decided by her. There will be an over subscription criteria applied, as has been stated you could appeal and any discrimination would likely be very evident.

You can ask the school if there are any spaces in the year group.

Wasn't being harsh, you have drip-fed that you personally know her and are now saying she rolls her eyes, but even with that, put your rational hat on and you know schools don't work like that.

She has no power over admissions.
If there is a waiting list then thats that and your child going there previously is not one of the things that would push you up the list

BigSilly · 22/01/2025 11:14

We're you critical of them when you left?

The school will have a section detailing how mid-year apications are dealt with on its website.

If there is only one child waiting for a place and one becomes available, then that child will be offered it. If more than one has applied, all those who have applied will be ranked according to the oversubscription criteria and the place offered to the applicant who is ranked top of the list.

There are very limited circumstances under which the school may decide not to offer (I assume that your DS hasn't already been permanently excluded at least twice in his school career to date?), and nothing 'personal' comes into the process.
