Please can anyone advise
is it ok for a teacher to cut a child’s finger nails in school ????

Not usually.
Were they long & scratching them/other children? Did the child ask for them to be cut? Had the child hurt themselves/others because they were long?

no. As a nurse I wasn’t allowed to cut patients nails

Imagine strictly speaking they’re not supposed to but I assume they were too long and now it’s a bit embarrassing for the teacher to cut them? I wouldn’t think too much about it really other than checking myself…..

My school did this to my son. It was on my list to do but hadn’t got round to it.
They were long and they 100% needed doing, I was embarrassed to be honest as it’s something I should have done but dropped the ball.

if they did them it’s because they needed doing, its not something that I would complain about and probably done for the right reason (not scratching people)

Why would you not be ok with this?

It's not usual, but more context is needed. What's the situation?

If it's that you have a Teacher who has routinely starting cutting children's fingernails then I would it find weird and would probably say 'please don't, I will deal with this at home thanks'

However if I had somehow dropped the ball on this and the Teacher noticed my child had nails long enough to cause an issue (holding a pen, scratching, whatever) then I'd be embarrassed to have missed it myself. I'd just say 'thank you for sorting it and letting me know', I'd genuinely mean it, and I'd make sure I didn't miss it again because it's my job to make sure things like this are kept on top of!

All the finger nails or one which they had caught and if wasn’t cut was in danger of being pulled off causing damage?

Nineandtwenty · 20/12/2024 19:13

Can't say it's something I've ever done but imagine one nail would be permissible if it were hanging off and causing a problem. I'd probably just wrap a plaster around it myself though.

Good Heaven's, are you actually allowed to use plasters at your school? Perhaps it's different now (I really hope so...), but at our DC's primary school, if something couldn't be dealt with by the application of a piece of wet gauze(!), the policy was to get the parent in (or worse, call an ambulanceShock). And this was with a local ambulance service First Responder on the teaching staff.

Like a pp, I would find it odd, were a teacher to decide to randomly trim pupils' nails, but I would be grateful if my child had caught their nail on something and the teacher had trimmed it to prevent further injury.
