Is being in scouting group more a state school/middle class activity in UK?
How is it looked upon socially ?
Looking for a seven year old

It depends on the where the group is based. They pull from the local area.

Buy why do you care?

It's just an activity. I wasn't aware it had a social class.

Needanewname42 · 05/12/2024 07:47

It's one of the cheapest activities to do. And different troops will have different demographic depending on the area.

I think it goes across all classes, it is one of the benefits of going.

Bumdrops · 05/12/2024 07:50

The groups will reflect the locality ! Odd question ?!

WillowTit · 05/12/2024 07:51

they do make a promise to god if that is important to you but they can miss that bit out if you prefer
i think they are great, inclusive and value for money

They're all over the country, as with most volunteer-led groups the vibe and activities the group does will vary a bit depending on the local area. But I don't think people who hear "Little Johnny goes to Beavers/Cubs/Scouts" think oh they must be posh, or oh they must be working class. It's probably less class-associated than a lot of extracurricular activities, like hearing Johnny does rugby after school or piano lessons.

Fwiw when Scouts first set up "Squirrels" groups for the youngest children, from 5yo, they deliberately tried to locate them in less well off areas as they felt those children would most benefit from the extra opportunities.

It's bloody brilliant, that's what it is. DS has had so many great opportunities through Scouting and I am very grateful to the volunteers who do everything to make it happen. When you are sleeping in a tent or falling off a paddle board class doesn't come into it.
