Yr 6 SATs and although I know I shouldn't care..

and it won't affect his school place for next year, and we're playing it very low key and not making a fuss but I find that I do care. I am nervous for him and worrying that he's worried and ....basically I want it all over.

Next week is test SATS all week. Week after the real thing. We've already had the 'make sure your child is in school come hell or highwater letter'.

I hate exams. Hated them when I was at school and hate them by proxy for my DCs now

Anyone else feeling like this?

yeah, me

southeastastra · 29/04/2008 12:01

not really, should i be more worried?

PuppyMonkey · 29/04/2008 12:03

Me too, but I keep telling myself not to be so silly. In fact, dd1 is really chilled out about it, bit worried about maths but I told her just to do what she can and it doesn't matter a jot!

OrmIrian · 29/04/2008 12:03

No you shouldn't sea! I don't want to be. These are the first test of any kind that the school has made a big deal of. And it's rubbed off on him. He's miserably and saying things like 'what happens if I have a bad day'.

lol sorry ds is taking year 9 sats

southeastastra · 29/04/2008 12:04

and i was worried at year 6

SueW · 29/04/2008 12:07

Nope, not worried. DD won't have a problem and she's not worried either. They get lots of tests at school, this is just another set and they want to get it out of the way so they can coast to the end of term (cycling proficiency training, residential trip, Y6 production of Pied Piper, end of school party, etc).

bellavita · 29/04/2008 12:07

My DS1 has them too - he also has a broken right arm so not only am I worried about him doing them, I feel sorry for him having to go to another room and be isolated as someone will be scribing for him.

He will be worried that the person that is doing this will judge him if he thinks he may have given them the wrong answer.

bellavita · 29/04/2008 12:08

Hey SueW - my DS is doing the Pied Piper (he is a rat.

veryoldtimer · 29/04/2008 12:33

ds1 quite enjoys doing tests and doesn't seem overly worried about them. He does know they're important.

Having said that his school barely mentioned SATs at all until after Easter, so there hasn't been a big build-up. He's doing mocks of all the tests this week, then a week off next before the real thing.

Once SATs are over they have a fantastic time in yr6, so he can't wait to get it all finished!

wiffey · 29/04/2008 12:46

My DS has the amount of days left untill sats written on the board in the class & they are doing practise papers every day, feel sorry that they are put under so much pressure at a young age, I hated exams too & know that DS is worrying.

SueW · 29/04/2008 19:29

bellavita DD is Girl 1, I think.

I don't have to provide a costume, she can wear every day clothes. Her friend is a rat - a punk rat!

MargaretMountford · 29/04/2008 19:46

I am determined not to be anxious but they ( the school ) seem to hype it all up so that you can't help but feel a bit worried and am sure ds is picking up on it -tthough he seems quite calm...will be glad when it's over. The school has Big SATs Breakfast all that week where they can have breakfast at school ...he's also been going to maths booster classes to get him up to speed as it's his least good subject

RosaLuxembourg · 29/04/2008 21:15

DD doesn't seem bothered and neither am I. The school isn't stressing them too much, and I know DD has worked hard all year in class so whatever level she gets it will be fine.

bellavita · 29/04/2008 21:26

SueW - Not sure what kind of rat DS1 is yet (huffs and puffs already at the thought of having to do a costume).

Funny they are both doing the Pied Piper and DS is also going on his residential - ours are going to Caythorpe Hall in Lincolnshire), he did his cycling proficency though in Yr5.

SueW · 29/04/2008 23:01

Caythorpe Hall is a PGL place, isn't it? DD did a PGL horse-riding plus multi-activity holiday a couple of years ago (not school) and loved every minute.

DD's going to the Lakes, to a place her school goes every year.

I think it's great Y6 have so much to look forward to post SATs.

But I work with Sixth Formers and whilst they have post-exam fun to look forward to, their exams are a tad more significant than SATs!

RustyBear · 29/04/2008 23:06

SueW - is it Lakeside YMCA your DD is going to? The school I work at goes there every year.

bellavita · 30/04/2008 07:59

Yes it is a PGL place. It does look good (but the trip is expensive).

They need to take so much stuff with them aswell, but I am sure they will enjoy it.

OrmIrian · 30/04/2008 08:01

DS#1's class did their PGL trip at the beginning of the year. It would have been good for them to be able to go after SATS but it was too expensive at this time of year so the school moved it. Had a fantastic time! As far as I know all they have to look forward to is being weighed and measured . He is going to the Tutankhamen exhibition later in the month but that's not just yr 6. I'm sire they'll find something nice for them all to do.

Rustybear - we live near the Lakes, so my boys go to Lakeside YMCA for a week every year in the hols, but just to do Daycamps. They have escorted buses from the end of our street. It's fantastic!

treelover · 30/04/2008 08:30

having gone through all the trauma of the eleven plus, i couldnt give a flying fig about the year 6 sats.
he will go into his new school, regardless of how he does. the only people affected by it are theschool, who , frankly havent done anything at all to help him in the entire time he was there. i dont see why he should get a level five just to please them.
effing school

foofi · 30/04/2008 08:51

Couldn't care less about the SATS. It's just for the benefit of the school - makes no difference to my child individually, so I won't be mentioning it to her or getting her to do any revision or anything!

Ds1 is worried about his too - which is coming from school because I definitely take the "I don't care, it doesn't matter, just do your best and you'll be fine" line.

bellavita, ds1 is going to Caythorpe Court too (it is expensive, isn't it - and all this you will need 73 pairs of trainers malarkey...)

OrmIrian · 30/04/2008 09:11

Yep. It's coming from the school for us too. We have emphasised again and again that as long as he does his best on the day it doesn't matter what the outcome is. But it doesn't seem to make any difference.
