Read write inc skipping a level

Wondering if anyone with any knowledge or expertise about Read Write Inc progression knows if it is normal/okay to skip levels?

DC is in year one and school reassess phonics groups every half term. Until now DC has progressed through the groups in order but this half term has skipped a group from pink to yellow (missing orange).

DC reads with fluency and expression and didn't seem to find the pink reading books challenging but spelling does not come naturally, and they don't seem to retain the spelling rules they've previously learnt (I have dyslexia and am exactly the same!). So I'm concerned skipping a whole level and missing focusing on some sounds could be detrimental. Or is that not how it works?

School have had staffing problems in year 1 since the start of the year so they have been taught by several supply teachers. The teachers from year R and 2 seen to be holding it all together and making sure year 1 are still receiving their proper phonics input but year 1 parent's evening was cancelled due to having no permanent teacher and it has been difficult finding anyone to talk to anyone about anything so far this year. Hence asking here!

It's normal. They've done their half-termyl assessment and he's done well. In most RWI schools, the assessment is reading only. They want the children to read as soon as possible. Throughout RWI, review is vital. The children review all previous sounds in each level, so he's not missing them, he's picked them up in some other way, which is the goal. Well done DS 👏

Oh phew. Thank you, that's reassuring to know.

You've actually reminded me that we practice all the speed sounds at the start of each book so of course they're always reviewing all the sounds 🤦🏻‍♀️
