Which Maths books do you use with your year 5 and 6 children when sadly they're not being well taught at school?

I know both Bond and CGP do them - probably others?

Which have you liked using and which not?

Which are most fun? most thorough? good at explaining?

DH does the kids homework and he really rates Maths No Problem. He has an undergraduate degree in maths and he likes how that series explain maths concepts.

I'll take a look - thank you!

How do you know theyre not being well taught?

loveyouradvice · 11/11/2024 19:47

Sadly it's clear @Soontobe60 - good experiences previously

The Bond series
They are 11plus focused but ignore that
They are great for progression, focusing on specific subjects and then mix and match of everything done before so your child won’t forget stuff as there’s reminders and repetition

My DS loved the Murderous Maths books, in the same vein as Horrible Histories. They start off easy with one about arithmetic, move through probability and geometry , and then the later books go up to algebra and even trigonometry IIRC. And they're quite funny.

Murderous Maths sounds fab - I'll take a look. Horrible Histories very popular here

And I'll look again at Bond - I liked using them previously (another child) but haven't been seeing them mentioned much

How do you know your dc just aren't listening?

SweetSakura · 12/11/2024 11:54

Could you sort a tutor?

Maths no problem is brilliant. It's used by a lot of schools and was the first DfE approved Singapore Maths curriculum. They do a text book which explains it all and a work book with all of the questions. No answers are given though. It takes them through 95% of the curriculum in a step by step, planned programme.

Also try White rose (online) if you're just looking for worksheets. We used White rose in lockdown and a lot of schools use it. It requires more knowledge of the primary maths curriculum though.

We use the CPG ten minute books once a week. They also have more involved workbooks that cover all the topics.

Sorry - posted too soon. We also use the Maths Factor online app every day.

All sound like great resources - thank you! Going to investigate...
