Tips for helping child recognise sounds in words

DS (7) dyslexic and the school have lots of strategies in place which seem to be helping (a bit)
But when I help him with his homework I have noticed the most bizarre spellings (to be expected) but also, an absolute lack of understanding how to structure simple words.
He will completely miss out vowel sounds and whole parts of words, for example stop will become stp, kids will become kiz help will just become hp.. I will sound the word out really slowly and clearly to help him spell it, but it doesn’t seem to help a lot. His hearing has tested fine.
I know this is all part of dyslexia, but wondering if anyone has any tips or strategies to help him to make his words even slightly more recognisable? The school are very understanding in that his spelling will never be perfect, but not being able to decipher what he has written is really holding him back.
weirdly, his reading isn’t too bad. Any tips/games/strategies gratefully recieved.

A bit different... but my ASD child never understood how to 'sound out' a word and 'failed' the phonics test.

What worked for her was lots of reading together. I would point to each word as I read it so she could see what the word looked like. Apologies if this is something a dyslexic child couldn't easily do but this 'sight reading' approach worked really well for DD. Her spelling is good and she can get on with reading and writing without having to 'sound out' a word, which makes no sense to her at all.
