I applied for a job in a primary school before the summer hols, I got the job but not as many hours as I would like, I think I accepted in panic as my other contract came to an end at the school I was at due to the school dropping 2 classes for this coming school year and needed a job, I have signed the contract but I am going from yr 4 to reception and I am immunocompromised due to medication for Crohns disease! I am going to go and try this as I have signed the contract but does anyone know how easy it is to leave of I am not happy?

School support contracts usually have a 1 month notice period (unlike teachers, who generally need to give a lot of notice).

Have you completed your paperwork for your new job yet? Usually there are medical declarations to complete. You may find that if you like the school and they like you, there are options to take on extra hours with different age groups.

Depends on your role. Teacher's have to give notice by half term to leave at the end of the full term. Most other roles (TA etc) will be one month's notice. It'll be in your contract.

I work in Reception myself and absolutely love working with this age group, but 4/5 year olds can be germ factories so I understand your concerns if you're immunocompromised.

Could you mention your concerns to the headteacher on the off chance they could redistribute you elsewhere if you find it too much? Schools do sometimes shuffle TAs midyear for various reasons, if needs have changed. However, it's not much better further up the school in terms of germs I'm afraid.

I hope it works out for you. I'm sure you'll love Reception, germs aside! It's such a privilege to be involved right from the start of a child's school journey. The change in them between September and July is amazing. It's such a rewarding role :-)
