DS (11) accidently rhymed a teachers name (Jackie) with a well know racist word today and was over heard. The teacher is white though. He said that it just slipped out and that he knows these words should never be used. He is mortified as the school has said it will be reported as a racist incident although he will not be named. Can anyone help me as to why this might be? I am alittle embarrassed of the whole situation TBH. Thnks.

I have since been back to the head, who has treated me with much respect and totally understood my embarrassment. She has had a quiet word with him, and he's has decided to try and engage brain before opening mouth, more!!! She will still be reporting this as an incident, although it will not be recorded against him personally.......

Every incident has to be reported, as well as explaining to the child why it was wrong to say what they did.

Unfortunately, quite a few kids will make racist remarks, regardless of the colour of the teacher and/or the children around them. I deal with this day in day out and I'd say that the situation is getting worse in schools, as is homophobia.

I don't think anyone can underestimate how upsetting hearing these comments is for many children of ethnic origins. I had a boy a few weeks ago who spent the whole morning out of class sobbing after being casually called a name.

Usually quite strong action is taken by the school after a 2nd incident from an individual child.

Critter, the point about the crying little boy might help Stonedout appreciate the hurt that the word can cause. It is not merely an abbreviation - it is the usage over time of the word with an intention to scorn and cause hurt that makes the word offensive. There may be places in the world where to be called a Brit would make one cringe.

This is why I disagree with those who think that the use of the word could not be racist because Jackie is white.
