How unimpressed will teacher be missing first day of term going into Juniors?

Have just found out that DS school has teacher training days 3 and 4 of Sept so after summer hols they return on Friday 5. We were hoping to go away (UK - not a special holiday IFSWIM)if we could get a bargain the week before, but having check prices we could go that week for £250 instead of £550+ the week before.

Obviously it would mean DS missing the first day of term - do you think this get me off on the wrong foot with the teacher or will the school not be suprised?

Feel more sorry for your ds really missing the first day back. Dont think the teacher will be that fussed.

they're really asking for it, aren't they? crazy school.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/04/2008 17:20

would be better not to miss first day for dc

hercules1 · 15/04/2008 17:22

Sigh. It's not the schools fault. We have a problem next year with our days and will have to have a Monday or Friday as a school day but the rest not. It's just the way it works out next year with the number of inset and pupil days that have to be held.

geekgirl · 15/04/2008 17:22

ok, sorry

LynetteScavo · 15/04/2008 17:22

I doubt the teacher will even notice. There will be 29 other children to focus on. It'll be more of a problem for your DS to miss the first day, I would imagine. It's not another school building, is it) If not, phone him in sick.

I must admit to being really torn - I think the first day is important to see routines etc. but can't help be think there will be loads of parents thinking along the same lines.

Will listen out for what other parents are doing - maybe i'll feel less guilty then. Would have been so much better if they could have just gone back on the following Monday.

Of course it's daft. I doubt the school is particularly pleased as well. We have spent hours trying to work our days out.

TwoToTango · 15/04/2008 17:27

No its the same building LynetteScavo - he will know which teacher he is having before the summer hols as they spend a couple of afternoons in their new classrooms before they break up.

Even if they'd had a TT day on Weds 3 and gone back of the Thursday it would have been better. I reckon the school will be pretty empty that Friday

I do sympathise hercules1 - I realise that the head can't please everyone all of the time (if he's lucky he can please some of the people some of the time!!), but surely they could have tagged the days onto Oct half term or Feb half term?

OP posts:
hercules1 · 15/04/2008 17:41

That would have meant you wouldnt have got a full week on one of those half terms including the teachers. Very hard to have just a four day half term for teachers or pupils. This way the day comes at the end of a long holiday.

TwoToTango · 15/04/2008 17:48

I didn't realise it was so complicated hercules. I thought that the Head just picked days to coincide with any training or to make sure they were spaced out evenly.

dd is missing first 2 days of year one this sept and i am not worried. she already knows kids

Blandmum · 15/04/2008 17:56

It does make it tough on the student when they miss the first few days.

I once had a student who missed the first week of secondary school. Not a good things at all

irisha · 15/04/2008 18:08

I wouldn't even give a second thought to it. Just go. First day will actually be crazy, so not a day to learn all the routine, which he can do perfectly well later.

TwoToTango · 15/04/2008 18:38

I wouldn't even think about doing it if it was secondary school or even if it was more than one day Martianbishop.

I've just spoken to 2 mums at football club who are contemplating doing the same.

It will be very tough on your DS-I wouldn't do it.Any other date is better.

TwoToTango · 15/04/2008 20:45

Really AbbeyA - do you think it will be that bad, even though it is in the same school building and he will be in the same class of children.

I really can't decide - think I will see what other parents are doing. If there are a few in his class then at least there will be more than one in the same boat.

Thanks for all your answers - always good to get another perspective.

I would go for sure, it is the same school, he knows kids, will have met the teacher beforehand, cannot see any problems.

School should have more sense - and yes i know it is tricky but then so is being a working parent and affording holidays!

AbbeyA · 15/04/2008 22:10

I wouldn't do it myself, I would rather have any other date-however if he is in the same building with the same children, and several families do the same thing, then I suppose it is not so bad. I know one family who did it when the DS was starting secondary school and that seemed very unfair.

stonedout · 16/04/2008 07:41

I bet there happens to be a few kids off sick the first few days, so they will have the 'same
disadvantage'. Just go and enjoy yourselves

bozza · 16/04/2008 08:50

I am taking DS out of school for a day. This is because our school holidays don't start until the Tuesday so DS should be in school on Monday 21 July but we are going on hols on 19 July.

I know it is difficult for the school to sort out but I think in our case taking a day out of the traditional 6 weeks hols (we will still be paying top wack ) is not really on. Twototango is slightly different because she is looking at the first week in September and has dropped from peak prices to mid by the sound of it.

I understand the argument that it is difficult to sort out but I do think that we should have our full 6 weeks hols and they should have taken a day from Easter or half term or whatever. And we have had quite a lot of Mondays as training days.

SlartyBartFast · 16/04/2008 09:05

tell them
i am sure they wont mind, one day,
going back on a friday i shouldnt think you would be the only one considering this
