In year admissions waiting list not held

Can anyone offer advice on this clause:
Over-subscription lists for mid-term transfers are not held.

Obviously I understand it, but we are going to be applying for a mid-term transfer at some point this year- does that mean if there's no spaces when I apply, it's just a straight rejection? What happens if I apply in October and there's no space but in November, there is?

Thanks all

You have to phone them regularly if they don't keep waiting lists.

Are not held by whom?
The LA dont hold a list but individual schools and academies typically do.

Here's the full clause in the school's admission policy:

L County Council maintains an over-subscription list for XX Primary School. (This is essentially a waiting list and is ranked in the same order as the published oversubscription criteria above and not by date of application.) Over-subscription lists for mid-term transfers are not held.

Thank you. Would it make a difference if I applied NOW as then it would be considered a late application and not an in-year transfer so then they'd have to put her on the list of kids who applied and didn't get a place in April.

I know the Official line on this is...
The ‘admission authority’ for the school (usually the school itself or the council) must keep a waiting list open for at least the first term of each school year.

Again, thanks for your help.

No, so I'm well aware we'll be at the bottom of the list until we move (Oct time). But at least we'll be on the list as opposed to applying in Oct for a mid term transfer and then not even getting on a list!

Ignore that...I can't do a "late application" - it now has to be an in year transfer and directly to the school so I'll have to do it when they're back. And then get used to calling them every day when we move (madness!)

LAs keep them for the year of standard admission for schools/academies where they manage the admissions (typically but not always reception and year 7) for the autumn term (up to 31st December).

Typically for all other year groups they are held by the school. They are usually cleared at the end of each academic year and you need to re-apply (this does vary by school though)

What year group is it for?

When you move you will become a priority and they will find you a place under the fair access protocol.

It is up to a 4 week process but usually much quicker.

You are making this much more complicated than it is in reality. Look up the fair access for the LA that you are moving to.

Blahblahblah81 · 09/08/2024 17:25

Reception year.

Reception year.

There are very few LAs in the country that do not have a glut of reception places.

When you move then you can apply from your address and the LA will find you a place. If it is more than a certain distance they have to provide transport. If they cant find a place within 4 weeks (very unlikely for reception- some LAs have 1600 spare reception places but there are a handful with tight numbers overall or in some areas) then fair access kicks in. They often let you apply with a signed rental agreement or proof or exchange of contracts for a purchase.

Assuming England from your earlier posts and the terminology used.

prh47bridge · 10/08/2024 11:06

If this is in England, they have to keep a waiting list until Christmas. They cannot refuse to add you to the waiting list. However, beyond that they do not have to maintain a waiting list. Most schools do but, if they don't, you will have to keep checking and apply as soon as a place becomes available.

Do you have a place for the start of term in September related to your current address?

Yes I do. This is for the school that will be close to us when we move.
