Help with approach to spelling

DS yr 6 had since grade 1 always worked at the spelling level above in the word list and workbook. This year he has a new teacher who gave him year 6 workbook which he did last year. Explained he has already completed this. We usually do a pre-test at home for the week and just concentrate on the words he misses, which are always less than 5. He doesn’t get any homework and does the whole list in this workbook and for say cover write check.

He was given a level test at the beginning of semester 1 (Feb in AUS) and got 100%. this particular curriculum only goes to year six so a different year 7 curriculum was found.

Start of semester 2 this week and teacher tells him in front of others that he has been ‘downgraded’ to year six as he does not use correct spellings in his writing. I have no doubt that if I asked him to spell a difficult word he would know if but accept that during writing his spelling definitely drops. I thought this would common since there are lots of other things he has to think about whilst writing. It’s never been mentioned by any previous teachers.

I can’t see the value in repeating a semester of spelling, doing the exact same workbook last year which didn’t help him integrate his knowledge into his actual writing. He scores highly in spelling SATS but struggles a bit with writing especially plots and ideas. It just seems a waste of half a year.

Does repeating the same work see like the best approach or could this be tackled a different way? Is there anything I can do at home to help him?

Many thanks for any advice.

have you considered speaking to his teacher
I I think I may move school if possible

Thanks, yes I am planning to speak to his teacher, just gathering info first.
I just looked through his year 5 writing book and there are barely any spelling mistakes. The words are really not sophisticated so are pretty easy to spell. He isn’t really using the harder words from his spelling in his writing.

What does it matter?

You say his Spag is good. Just encourage him to use more complex words in his writing.

Have you considered doing toe to toe spelling program. Also, how much does he read? Can he read independently?

Can you buy this where you live?

Hi,

As a teacher I know it’s easy to lose your professional face and react negatively sometimes, but I also know the detrimental impact negative comments have, especially when made publicly. If you haven’t already, speak to the teacher and share what I’ve said but from the perspective of a parent. Explain that comments, such as ‘you’ve been downgraded’ can be made away from the glare of others and put in a more child-friendly manner.

Regarding their spellings, ask the teacher or their colleagues for recommendations, such as websites, spelling platforms and books, which will help your child improve their spelling.

At my school, we use an online platform called Spelling Frame. Whilst it’s not for everyone, I do think it’s an easy win to practise tricky spellings.

Best of luck!

I think this outlines why spelling schemes are utterly pointless, unless the child learns how to apply them to their work. Many kids are capable of learning a set list for a test. It's quite an outdated approach now. Personally, I always did well at spelling tests as I was a diligent student who did my homework and practised them. I'm not good at spelling though. Far from it.

You ask what's the point of him repeating, but equally what is the point in him ploughing forwards if he's not applying it?

It definitely sounds like it could have been handled better (were those words actually used or was it his interpretation?). It sounds like he needs more practise though, so I'd respect his teacher's judgement.

Maybe get him to practise the words in long sentences or paragraphs.
But i would also work on him using more descriptive language in his writing.

Possibly more reading so he just knows the spellings and what looks right.

When doing MFL i would rewrite the words several times but also write out paragraphs of say spanish
