Recommendations for Good Independent Schools in North London

Hi everyone,

I'm seeking advice on independent schools in North London for my daughter. She's currently at a prep school in Barnet, but unfortunately, it has not been a good experience for her. The environment there is quite toxic, with a lot of 'mean girl' behaviour, and it's not just the students — some parents contribute to the negativity as well.

I've also come to learn that many girls at the school leave struggling with mental health issues, including eating disorders and other challenges. No one seems to want to speak up for fear of being left out of the 'pack,' which speaks volumes. This has made my decision to move her rather urgent.

Ideally, I would like to find a co-ed school. I feel that a mixed environment might help mitigate some of the gang-like unkind behaviour that can occur in all-girls settings.

If anyone has any recommendations for good independent co-ed schools in North London, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks so much in advance!

There’s Highgate School which is highly selective. They are generally always full but you could ask to be put on the occasional place waitlist.
There’s also North Bridge House which is not selective and they will usually have available places. King Alfred School in NW11 which I believe is usually at capacity.

those are the only all-through co-ed schools that I know of in North London (I’m really only familiar with schools around NW3).

if you’re looking for a prep, there’s Devonshire House and Heathside in Hampstead. Belmont in Mill Hill is 7-13.

There’s also Saint Cristina’s in SJW and Trevor Roberts in NW3 which both go until 11 and 13, respectively.

What about state schools? If she’s mid-primary there may be good options as children leave when they move out of London.

also if commutable - Forest in East London is co Ed and all through.

@JustASquareMoreChocolate Thanks so much and yes we also considered this but sadly all the good state schools within our catchment are oversubscribed. The only one with a space has had a few concerns. We may have found a good school though so fingers crossed it all works out.
