Scotland Deferral

We live in Scotland, my little boy is 4 (5 beginning of Oct).

He is academically and socially ready for school, but not so much emotionally/behaviour wise.

It came to our attention via nursery (3 weeks ago might I add...) that an Educational Visitor may come out to watch him and assess his behaviour. He can't sit still for very long nor can he listen and follow instructions (this was evident at his most recent P1 visit where group time was 10mins long and he couldn't sit still/was talking over the teacher etc...).

He's been at nursery since I went back to work around 10 months old (part time to begin with at a private nursery) and then moved to full time last year.

My question is, has anyone ever deferred a child who believes they're going to P1? If so, how did you go about this? I don't want to break his heart as all his friends are moving up (minus around 10 kids he's been with this last year). I don't want him being labelled the bad kid because he can't sit/listen/acts up in front of people.

I've asked other parents what their children are like in his group and they said they can sit and listen well. So I know there may be some form of ASN (potentially) going on top.

I've asked nursery time and time again but they just say he's on the cusp, yet when I got that phone call re the P1 visit I feel like that was them saying defer even though they can't tell me what to do. I'm a teacher as well so I can see both sides, but I wish they would step up and tell me because at the end of the day they know what he's like in an educational setting...

Any advice? :)

I’m not in Scotland (I am Scottish but live in England now) however we didn’t defer DS who is summer born in England (so similarly close to the cusp). He has ASD. The advice we got was mixed and mostly against deferral as deferral won’t change background difficulty. He’s really flourished at school. Have you spoken to P1 team?
