tell her they are primarily to make the school look good, not her. noone other than her and her teachers are ever going to know or care how she does.

dramaqueen · 04/04/2008 21:04

they are actually to test how well the teachers have been teaching, nothing to do with the children!

bozza · 04/04/2008 21:04

That is not right. I would be onto the school about the pressure she is being under. My DS (also Y2)does not even know he has to do SATS. Tell her to just pretend it is another piece of work she has to do.

scanner · 04/04/2008 21:05

Then she really, really doesn't need to worry. My dd1 did SAT's in yr2 a couple of years ago. That year she had just moved to the school and was in the bottom group for all subjects. She thought that she wouldn't do well in the SAT's and even I was a little concerned. However her results were great - she even got a 3 for something.

They aren't too difficult, its just stuff they've done at school lots. The most important things are to - relax, get a good nights sleep, eat a good breakfast and convince your parents to buy some sweets as a treat when they're finished.

is the school going on about them?

my ds(6) has no ideas about them tbh.

Jessie3 · 04/04/2008 21:11

I teach year 2 and they have no idea that they have already completed some of the tests. They have been completed as part of normal classroom practice. I am shocked that your dd knows anything about them, and would make sure her class teacher is made aware of how upset she has been. It's up to her to do something about this.

Why does she even know about them?

Christywhisty · 04/04/2008 21:15

Ds didn't even get 4 test papers sent home for his Year 6 sats. At KS2 she shouldn't even know she is doing them.

mollymawk · 04/04/2008 21:15

Glad DD is okay now. Didn't get time to write a message for her (I think quite slowly...) but I am surprised the school has sent home test papers for a 7 year old. Is this normal? Surely they are too young to be pressurised about tests?

Jessie3 · 04/04/2008 21:19

Sent home four test papers???? I am truly shocked. What the hell is their justification for this? The tests are to support the teacher's judgement in order to give a teacher assessment - test results aren't even reported to parents any more at the end of key stage one. This is a flagrant abuse of the test materials - I would contact the LEA to find out when this school was last moderated. The moderators would be horrified at this.
No wonder your dd is stressed.

But that's terrible! Can you speak to the head to explain what this is doing to your DD (and no doubt at least some other children)?

My dd is in Yr2 and is totally unaware that STATS are coming up - they do no preperation and kids aren't told its anything special. So thats good.

Tell your dd what my dd's teacher told me and thats; "if any child in my class doesn't understand something then thats my fault not their fault as I haven't explained it well enough".

Jessie3 · 04/04/2008 21:25

Seriously, contact the LEA, they would take a very dim view of these practices.

Practice papers for KS1 SATs is ridiculous. I am hopping mad on your behalf! No wonder your dd is feeling stressed about it. The pressure should be on your dd's teacher, not her.

DS1 is in yr6. I haven't been told (haven't asked) what he's predicted for SATs, and he hasn't brought home any practice papers ever. They have done the odd one at school in the last half term, but they certainly don't bang on about it.

When he did KS1 SATs (and they were more formal than they are now), he didn't even know the term "SATs" and didn't realise that the "little tests" they did were anything particularly special!

AbbeyA · 04/04/2008 21:36

Aged 7 and practise papers in the holidays?!!
Have a holiday-don't do them, and explain to the teacher on the first day back. The tests don't matter in the least to your DD, she may possibly be used to group her in year 3 but the teacher will quickly use her own judgement anyway. They only matter to the school for league tables.Have a holiday and don't even mention them. The first exams that matter to your DD are GCSE'S (unless she does school selection tests).

You can withdraw her from the SATs if you want to.
