Fecking numberjacks

They have persuaded dd that 1+1=11, I know this is the case as I watched the fecking program. I have tried to dissuade her from this, with finger counting etc. Any other tips?

Or rants against the shiteness that is numberjacks lol

were they doing binary?

NoBiggy · 01/04/2008 00:18

In that case 1+1 would be 10.

It's an odd sort of programme.

BBBee · 01/04/2008 00:22

so not only are they doing binary they are doing it wrong!

NoBiggy · 01/04/2008 00:27

The innumerate bastards!

havalina · 01/04/2008 00:45

I have no idea but through their mad blah blah blahing (ok admits not paying 100% attention). DD now thinks that adding is 1+1=11 I have tried explaining ,but no numberjacks know better 2+3=23 etc grrr wankers. And to think I entrusted CBeebies with dd's mind

I got round it by saying to DS (5yo) 1 NEXT TO 1 = 11, 2 NEXT TO 3 = 23 etc which soon became "one and one".

1 ADD 1 = 2 (proven with fingers or any other 2 items).

He seemed to get that slight difference.

tigermeow · 01/04/2008 16:39

So that is why DD announced that 1+1 was 11. I knew she was watching numberjacks but wasn't paying attention to it.
DH managed to convince her that 1 AND 1 made the number 11, but 1+1 was 2.
Awful program but she oddly loves it.

WowOoo · 01/04/2008 16:40

I hate that prog and try to turn it off and distract dd as soon as it comes on. Think it's creepy too.

OverMyDeadBody · 01/04/2008 16:46

I used the same tactic as lewisfan to get DS to see the difference, so now he gets that if you write 1 and 1 next to each other you get 11, but if you add 1 and 1 you get 2.

Caz10 · 01/04/2008 16:49

i've never seen numberjacks but i say to kids at school sometimes that such a number "stands next to" another number in that situation, as in a 2 standing next to a 3 for 23 etc

Caz10 · 01/04/2008 16:49

oh sorry, just read the op, now i see that lewisfan has already said this!

fleximum · 01/04/2008 16:51

Haven't had too many numeracy problems with numberjacks yet (ds is 2) but I have had him scared that the problem blob is going to get him!

SpringSunshine · 01/04/2008 20:18

You could try teaching her place value and explaining that it is 1 ten plus 1 unit that makes 11

Mine loved it too but never seemed to have this problem thankfully

now they have moved onto Transformers, Ben 10 etc

Bluestocking · 01/04/2008 20:30

Numberjacks is crap, isn't it? I don't think it's confused DS, he's probably too young to take any of it in, but I can't stand those horrible priggish little "agents".

SpringSunshine · 01/04/2008 20:38

bluestocking - I had been remembering it rather fondly until you mentioned the 'agents' - you're right they were so 'up themselves' (vile expression but fits )

beautifuldays · 01/04/2008 20:39

my ds also used to think that 1+1 = 11

i had to really explain by getting a car and then putting another car next to it and showing him that there were 2 cars. iyswim

seemed to do the trick
