8+ Exams SPJ, KINGS, WU - which year curriculum would be enough?

Hi everyone,

My son has been preparing for 8+ exams of these schools. I keep reading mixed messages about which year's curriculum would be enough for the exams. Some say Year 3 and Year 4 would be enough; whereas so many other people say we should even do the Year 5 - 6 which I find hard to believe? I know the exams for these schools would be tough, but I am having difficulty to believe he should even be able to do the Yearj 5 - 6 Maths to pass??

We are doing CGP books and Atom at the moment.

I would highly appreciate if you could share your experiences..

Thank you in advance!

you need to post on the primary education board - this one is for university employees

We've moved this to primary education now. Flowers

If you go by SJPS website, for 7+ they say year 2 and the start of year 3.
so for 8+ I would assume up to year 4 as a maximum.

In year 3, they do year 4 maths worksheets. It’s very easy for some of the boys, less easy for others. I think you should make sure your son is comfortable doing year 4 maths for the 8+ exam (as they’ll want to make sure the boys are working at least a year above the normal expected level). Once he’s mastered that, move on to year 5, but don’t worry if he’s struggling a bit with that because that’s beyond the level that’s actually required.

The advice we had was to do the Year 4 material for maths, focusing on accuracy and speed, not go beyond.

Our challenge was that our son felt the yr3 and yr4 stuff was too easy for him, but he'd make silly mistakes.

We let him work on harder material (not sure if this was a sensible use of time, but it kept him interested, and possibly gave him more confidence). Then we framed it as a game to try to get 100% on the Yr3 and Yr4. That was the trick that worked for him, and he got good at checking his work, reading the question, being aware of his typical errors, etc. I'd also tell him his mark and have him find his errors.

Some info here from a tutor with lots of experience of these schools (haven't used her tutoring but know she has a good reputation):
