Should children be doing SATS in yr 2? surly this is too much pressure on them- I thought they had been scrapped?

They’re optional now. Lots of schools will still go ahead with them as it gives you an idea of where the children are but final results will be teacher assessment.

Definitely should be doing sats, some kids in year one can't even read as parents don't feel its "necessary" where as some kids in year one know their 2,5 and 10 times tables.. Its up to the parents what they want their kid to learn

Thanks. I just feel its too stressful for a child who may have ADHD/ASD (he has been referred for assessment by GP). He is already behind in age related expectations so why worry him more, he has such poor self esteem over school as it is, (even getting him there each day is awful)- school is very unsupportive...... Obviously I want to him to well academically but mental wellbeing is more important.

Many schools will still use them as a snap shot to see where children are and to provide evidence if needed for interventions. Many schools try to be relaxed about how they are put to the children. We used to call them quizzes and when they were statutory some of my children would write their name on the reading paper then go off to do an intervention activity. Now it is not statutory schools can be even more relaxed and note the support given or just not use them.

Year two SATS aren't stressful. They don't have to be done on a certain day so the schools can manage the children who might find it stressful in smaller groups.

My child also has moderate autism and damand avoidance and needs a 1 to 1 throughout the day, doesn't do music due to the loud noise but people with autism are more than capable, making adjustments and finding what works for your child is what's important, for my child they know their times tables, i taught them at home myself in 10 minute intervals so they don't get too overwhelmed. I am also a parent with childhood diagnosed adhd i thought i was lazy until i learnt to accommodate myself now I'm also back at university studying, anything is possible. It may he worth looking at what other schools are out there once the assessments are completed x

I teach Year 2. SATS are optional this year, there is no requirement to report data and no moderation. Schools might still use the tests as internal assessment but there is much less pressure than in previous years.

Schools do lots of assessments on children so they know if they are meeting age related expectations or have any areas they might need support with. SATS are just another way of doing this.
It’s all fine and normal for children to experience stress in life. It’s good for them and helps them cope with stress in the future.

What makes you think they are stressful?

Obviously it depends on how school presents it, but i feel asking a child who is already behind his peers to sit a test (esp if the word 'test' is used) is a big pressure if he not up to standard. He already comes home say thing like "I'm a bad useless boy cos I can't get the work right"
I get all the stuff about needing to learn to handle stress in life but not for fairly pointless school data. I'll be moving him in september as school has no interest in supporting his extra needs and he is getting no extra help.

Mine was in Y2 last year, SATs weren't in the slightest bit stressful, they just saw them as fun quizzes! Our school handled it all brilliantly.

I worked in yr2 for 10 years+ and the only children who got stressed over the 'quiz booklets' were those whose parents or older siblings wound them up! Ours were staggered each morning, half did the quizzes and the other half did outside games or went swimming.
Yr6 sats were similar apart from they all came in early for a cooked breakfast. Ask the teacher how they handle those children who are getting stressed.
