No running in the playground

Is it only me or does anyone else think this is rediculous?
The children can skip and play certain ball games (football/basketball) on certain days.
I feel the whole school day is so structured a bit of running around and screaming like banshees to let off steam would be a good thing at playtime.

suzywong · 27/03/2008 12:37

it is utterly bonkers
train your child to technically skip but in a manner that looks like running to the untrained eye. That'll show them

PotPourri · 27/03/2008 12:38

Madness. Next they won't be allowed to laugh. No wonder there are so many obese kids - running being villified - what next??

cornsilk · 27/03/2008 12:38

Why have they done this? Is it health and safety or is the head just power crazy?

Porpoise · 27/03/2008 12:39

well then they'll have to rename it, won't they?

It's not a PLAYground if they can't move above walking pace, is it?

More like a prison yard...

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2008 12:39

oh dear

I like suzywongs idea, when does a skip become a run anyway?

Porpoise · 27/03/2008 12:40

actually, what they probably mean is 'No nasty noisy boys rushing about'

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 27/03/2008 12:40

Surely skipping is more likely to result in a fall than running?

PotPourri · 27/03/2008 12:41

Running is when both feet come off the ground at once I understand. Well, related to walking anyway. That is why speedwalking can be as quick are jogging/running, but looks like a duck walking!

NaughtyNigel · 27/03/2008 12:43

am training DD to speedwalk - but only in measured regulated circles.
tennis balls have been banned too.

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2008 12:44

but your feet come off the floor simultaneously when you skip

yes they do, you just re land on the lift off foot, and knees at at wnaky angles

morningpaper · 27/03/2008 12:44

lolol

this is mad

NaughtyNigel · 27/03/2008 12:45

skipping with ropes that is - not fairy typr skipping.
it is bonkers then? not just me being fed up with school?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 27/03/2008 12:46

iN MY YOUNGER SISTERS SCHOOL KISS CHASE WAS BANNED. tHING IS THEY NEVER EVEN KISSED WHEN THEY CHASED.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 27/03/2008 12:47

Oh sorry didn't read that before posting.

scattyspice · 27/03/2008 12:59

My DS can only just cope with the no running inside rule (he gets by by'running when no one can see me') .

Miggsie · 27/03/2008 13:01

...so you can't play tag then?!
Crazy!

VanillaPumpkin · 27/03/2008 13:02

Lunacy.

citylover · 27/03/2008 13:04

this sounds like the sort of thing my DSs primary school (see my other thread).

I was thinking it is getting bit like a concentration camp before reading this one.

Sounds ridiculous to me!

They need to let off steam at playtime imo

I don't think repressing them to this extent works.

WriggleJiggle · 27/03/2008 13:04

What are the reasons given? Lack of space? Unsuitable footwear? Everything can be overcome. I'd hate to teach a class who hadn't been alllowed to run around at break.

aintnomountainhighenough · 27/03/2008 13:06

Is it getting worse or is it me? Soon children will be sitting down all day long, as another poster has said no wonder there is so much obesity in children. Or perhaps the staff on duty just want an easy life???? My DD told me this week that they didn't go outside when it was raining because they might slip over (they stay in and watch a DVD instead). I can understand if it is hammering down but a bit of rain doesn't do any harm fgs.

MegGriffin · 27/03/2008 13:55

What a load of rubbish! They will have everything covered in soft foam next in case someone falls over.

EricL · 27/03/2008 13:58

Ha!

Never heard of anything more ridiculous.

Would love to see the teachers enforcing that.

I bet most just want to shove the kids out the door and let them do whatever they want for half an hour befor they have to come in again.

Sounds like something that someone has thought is a good idea (someone not directly affected by stupid policies like that) but most would think it was mad.

moondog · 27/03/2008 13:59

FFS

motherinferior · 27/03/2008 13:59

Oh god, I went to get the Inferiorettes last Thursday after 'wet play' (incarceration) had been enforced both breaktimes (it was pissing down, actually, I have absolutely no problem with this enforcement, they only get it when it is). I nearly got knocked over by tides of crazed juniors with all the pent-up energy of a full day of immobility.

(Mind you most of the juniors are my height anyway .)

Usually they dash around in that pointlessly annoying way that kids do. For ages. I pitied the poor teachers.

Beetroot · 27/03/2008 14:03

I wouod go discuss this with the head - bloody stupid
