Do schools tell parents *before* the kids see dentists/nurse/whoever else?

I don't want DS seeing the school dentist... will I be told before he sees them or will they just do it and then say "x y z happened" ?

Ours asked us for consent but didn't tell us exactly when they'd be seen.

I don't think they can make your ds see the school dentist without your knowledge or consent.

There is usually a form that must returned to the school to give permission.

May I ask why you don't want him seen? Just curious, never thought about refusing a dental check before...

My DC bring a letter home that I must sign to give consent. If the form is not returned, the dentist will refuse to see them.

I found it really useful for my DD to be seen by the dentist at school. She is terrified of the dentist, I have taken her 3 times but she refused to open her mouth on each occassion! But when the dentist visited her school, she just went along with it so got her teeth checked eventually.

I just don't see why a school needs to see in DS's mouth in such detail - it doesn't affect his intelligence!

Also, I have had horrendous experience with school dentists so would rather DS go to see a dental person whom I've "vetted" and with someone he trusts with him.

The dentist will only have a look and would write to you if there was any work doing so you could have that re-assessed or carried out elsewhere, same as eye checks. I agree with you about school dentists though - I had to go to the school dentist as my 'proper' dentist and he was a bit of a butcher . A good dentist is worth their weight in gold.

HappyMummyOfOne · 27/03/2008 22:06

DS had a letter recently asking if a "school dentist" could take a look at his teeth - they were also doing some sort of study.

We had only taken him to our own dentist the month before so I signed stating I didnt give permission.

I have a big fear of dentists and have finally found one I trust - he's fab with DS and I dont want him to have my fears.

SlartyBartFast · 27/03/2008 22:10

think you will pass on your fear by not allowing it.
all the children will be seen, thereby making it the norm.
it would be to catch those who never visit, or need work doing.

The school dentist only looks. I think it;s a really good idea - particularly if you are scared of the dentist yourself (like me). Your ds will not pick up any negative vibes from you - he or she will just line up with all the others and have their teeth looked at with a mirror and atorch (nothing else). if you opt out, I think it makes it a bigger deal than it is.
