School homework: report how much plastic goes to the bin at home per day

My DDs school asked the (year 5) children to track and report the number of plastic items going to the bin for one week.
The results will be gathered and entered online during class. I personally find it intrusive. Looks like a form of monitoring via the children, as that doesn’t look ethical.
Personally I think there are other ways to improve recycling. In any case, I’m intrigued to know if this is something common, guideline by the DoE, or something else. I’m trying to find references before deciding on my next move.
i hope this helps other mums/families as well.
Thanks.

You're being paranoid.

It's teaching research, recording and maths skills in a real world context.

This. It's not going to be reported to the Recycling Police

the bin police

🤣🤣 I'm imagining OPs child's headteacher lurking outside her house on recycling day ready to rummage through her bins

Paranoid indeed.

OP. The council already knows how much you recycle, because they collect it. They don't need school teachers or primary school kids to count it.

My kids school is also doing this, though lots of people not connected to schools are as well. It probably just ticks a lot of boxes for the school.

  • resources are pre-made & free
  • kids learn about environment
  • kids learn about surveying/data collection
  • could probably make some interesting graphs in next maths lesson

Do you normally eat ten trees a week or something? Don't overthink it.

Are you from Germany, op?

Think of this as opportunity to share information on things like plastic bottle recycling machines which are very rare and a reality here.

It's really, really nothing more than educating kids and encouraging them to recycle.

*novelty

Not reality obvs.
