hi I'm trying to write an essay on dental care in the under 8's
am having trouble finding out info on what happens at the dental screening done in schools, does anyone know if its just a quick look then a note home to recomend parents go to a dentist, or do they do any work while there in the school?
if anyone who has a clue, thoughts etc would be apprecited
have posted on other boards as unsure where best to post

dont know if this is any help, we're in scotland and i'm not sure if they do dental screenigs. DD goes to nursery every morning in a school and they they are doing a thing called Childsmile the dentist comes in every six months and puts a varnish on their teeth and i think it gets continued into primary 1,2 and 3

thank you, i will have to google that now, i've not heard of that before. i know my sons dentist has put it on his teeth but i don't remember him seeing a dentist in school. it says on our pct website that they do screening tho. we did move out of the area for a little while so perhaps its a regional thing and he missed it.

My DCs have never had any dental screening done via their school.
We are in England.

clayre · 26/03/2008 10:57

it is a good idea they also help parents find a dentist if they dont have one for their kids, they also send home letters if they think your child needs to see a dentist

trace2 · 26/03/2008 11:02

my ds 5 as just been selected for this! we got a letter sent home asking if he could take part, we said yes they asked if we would like to be there when they checked him( i didnt i knew he would play up if i went).
anyway was seen last week ds said they check like they do at his dentist and said numbers and letters out while looking, we got letter same day saying he needs a better check and gave us number to ask whjat was up!, we now his front teeth as an hole in it ,but i phoned anyway to see if they found any thing else ,they didnt.

hope this helps?

trace2 we got a letter home too for dd's teeth, i am a parnoid teeth brusher, never miss the dentist and the letter i got was quite rude stating she needed urgent dental treatment and to phone them asap so they can get us registered at a dentist .

Her teeth are a mess, her bite is out and one of her front teeth are discoloured co she fell and banged it at nursery but the health of her teeth is perfect, infact our dentist says she doesnt need she varnish done.

dylsmum - they come into the primary schools and look in the dc's mouths, and do absolutely nothing. When ds3 had his screening done, he'd broken a bottom incisor in half (bouncing on the bed with ds1) and as I was in helping in his class that day, I went along to explain that it wasn't rotten, just broken. She didn't even notice it!!!

Another boy has really bad teeth (I was a dinnerlady at the time too, so noticed what he ate - )really black stumps, but I didn't see any notice taken of him either.

dylsmum1998 · 26/03/2008 11:12

oh thats not going to help if they dont notice anything wrong in the childrens mouths.

clayre we brush ds teeth right too our dentis thinks ds is from having soya milk from a baby, but he dont want to do anything as they are his first teeth and will drop out, he as very little enamal on his teeth, as been given tablets but they have not helped

dylsmum1998 yes we are in barnsley yorkshire, we have no fluride in our water either

dylsmum1998 · 26/03/2008 11:15

our dentist doesnt want to do anything either cos its her baby teeth the dentist says they'll fall out and the over bite should sort itself

trace2 · 26/03/2008 11:19

plus i have app at our dentist again just to check! but i have found then to be right and very cooperative

trace2 · 26/03/2008 11:23

on an other note theres only ones childs toothpaste with it in and we have looked every where for it round here, can not get it, but got some in our bounty pack

dylsmum1998 · 26/03/2008 11:36

trace2 is that childs toothpaste with fluoride in it?
this is what started me on this essay, i was advised by health visitor to use adult toothpaste on my baby dd (when she was 9 months). wheni queried this with my dentist she said please dont do that- too much fluoride in it!
there is so much contradictory advice around about childrens dental care its confusing whose advice to follow. was hoping that by researching further into it i would find some conclusive advice, have to say i'm rather fed up cos i havent

yes its the milk teeth one with 100% fluoride for children, our dentist told me to use adult too for ds as we can not get it here! and asdults to strong a taste for ds( god sorry i could go on for ever lol)
