Maths help

DD is in Y2 and while her teacher says she is working at greater depth in the subject currently, she doesn't seem to be picking up general addition/subtraction etc as quickly as I would expect. She is quite a motivated kid so happy to do KS1 workbooks at home, we play board games etc but it doesn't seem to be helping a huge amount with general rote maths. For example, we've been playing monopoly this morning and she is really struggling with things like giving change for £20 if I needed to pay £14 rent. It seems like that's the sort of thing which should be fairly easy by his age?

Any tips (or apps etc) which can help with this?

The example you gave would be a bit tricky for my y2 as well - we would probably need to revert to physical objects and illustrate breaking into tens and ones. It would be easier for mine to subtract 14from 19 mentally, for example, but they would need help breaking a round number.

I don’t know that rote memorisation is really helpful once you are manipulating two digit numbers- it’s more about understanding the mechanics (and then having 10-6=4 by rote). I spend a fair bit of time working on math with mine, but not a teacher fwiw, so not sure what the school expectation is.

Zeus on the Loose is a good game for two digit addition/ subtraction practice. We also are big fans of Cubie math subscription, which is a bit pricy but very good at presenting concepts in lots of different ways.

Does your school use the Mathseeds app? I think you can purchase it as a parent if not. My reception age DS would be able to manage the change from 20 example you give quite easily, but admittedly maths is one of his strengths. But either way, he loves Mathseeds and the exercises definitely help.

Maybe give them a ks1 sats paper. As that would usually be sat in may until this year.
I would say there are a lot of q harder thabn that.

Its a number bonds to 20 topic

I used poker chips with DD at around that age, she was much better using physical objects; after a while she was doing it in her head.
