When do children stop phonics lessons?

I know every child is different but I just want a rough idea of the average age. My child is 10 and has learning disabilities and will still be doing phonics at secondary school next year. It's hard to tell how far behind he is because in meetings the school are always really positive and say he's making good progress etc but then I read a report where they are trying to get more money for his ehcp and it's a lot more realistic so I worry about how far behind he is.

Dd stopped her ‘Read Write Inc’ scheme phonics lessons mid way through year 2.

Whole class definitely stops by year 3.

There's often quite a few kids doing phonics interventions all through ks2 (year 3-6)

Normally by secondary they don't both any more, if they haven't learnt phonics after 7 years they are not going to get it.

It's also rare for secondaries to have anyone who can teach phonics.

There is a whole spectrum of phonics though.

It comes in stages.

(This is based on letters and sounds which was the government phonics scheme).

There are some children for whom phonics is not suitable mostly due to disabilities and so there are other methods of teaching reading.

Did he pass the phonics check in year 1? You could use the example materials to assess him, if appropriate.

My DD is in Year 2 and they've recently stopped doing phonics.

In DS's year 2 class, some ate still on it and other have moved up to the next reading scheme (which is comprehension based). According to the meeting at the beginning of the year, they plan to get most moved over by the end of the year, but will be running a phonics catch up group next year for those who aren't ready.

Our school continues phonics lessons right through to year 6 (including interventions where needed). It really depends on the scheme each school chooses to follow.

Thank you. Ds didn't pass the phonics test in year one, think he scored about 15 out of 40. He was meant to repeat it in year 2 but didn't because of covid. They have at least one teacher who can teach phonics at our catchment mainstream secondary school.

This varies by area, but where I am it's reduced each year as they go through primary though still shows up a bit right up to Year 6 and every secondary I know has literacy intervention that can include phonics right up through KS4, usually small group and 1:1.

There are significantly more kids who need support with reading skills for longer than it used to be expected or is commonly portrayed.

I think it's difficult to pin an average in part because what is meant by phonics support caries from the very basic sounding it out to using it as part of recall and refreshing in wider literacy programmes. I've seen advanced literacy programmes where phonics is combined with word roots and etymology, it still can come under phonics support though recommended up to Year 8.

The school pushing for more funding is what pretty much all schools are doing as the costs for the support are rising like everything else, and so doesn't automatically flag a concern.

Mid way through year 2 although some will continue into year 3.

A phonics result of 15 out of 40 puts him at the blending phonemes stage when he did the test.

Ie blending two letters to make a sound.

I used wordshark to help my DS and got him to do some daily.

It will assess where he is in terms of phonics and work from there.

Secondaries use phonics for catch up, SEN children and children learning English for the first time. There's an older children's version of Read Write Inc called Fresh Start, for example. I am Fresh Start trained and led putting it in place in a secondary. It's brilliant.
