Welsh language in primary schools

Could someone explain the rules please?

I thought some element of Welsh was compulsory even in English language schools (we are in Wales)

DS (Year 2) says he hasn't done any since joining his new school in September. He used to love it at his previous school (in year 1).

Am feeling a bit miffed about this.

god, yes you can see that it must be really tricky if you are not brought up speaking english...

its all the ll and ch sounds that I struggle with! oh and the rolling r's...if you get a word which requires all 3 noises I'm stuffed!

I was bought up in Colwyn Bay and got a 'B' in my GCSE Welsh (it comes in really handy in Manchester )There are though, lots of words/phrases that I bizarrely still want to use in everyday conversation..eg, frecwast, bechod, hufen ia, pannad o de, sospan fach. Sorry if the spellings are wrong, its been 15 years

moondog · 19/03/2008 22:43

Yes,they are good words.

I like Pencampwyrieathau.

I love the sheer length of it and all the syllables.

Umm, well as an English intruder, I'd just like to say that I think it's crucial to keep the old languages alive, or they'll be dead within a generation.

I read recently that only 4% of the Welsh have more than a passing acquaintance with a sentence of the indigenous language.

Peaches, go get 'em, girl

PeachesMcLean · 19/03/2008 22:57

Well i don't think I'll get anyone in the welsh language.

However Desi, if you recall crazy dogpoo lady over the road from me, now known as Jaws - she's spent the day in custody today, so she's been at it again I think.

I do recall the Red Indian who lives across the road ... Crazy Dog Shit.

I read your thread, btw. I reckon she'll be sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

This son you mention .. ever seen him? My instinct is that he keeps well away.

PeachesMcLean · 19/03/2008 23:10

DH has just said the lights are back on in her house, she's back....

The son hasn't been round yet. Will probably look like Mr Muscle (you know, the really scrawny bloke)

LOL, oh don't! I'll be having dreams about her swimming round the house and then biting my leg off.

You have to laugh .. or else you'd die

You'd 'ave to live or else you'd die
You'd 'ave to larf, or else you'd cry ..

On a serious note, the Police would have given her a very stiff gin caution. If she breaches the terms of her caution, she'll go inside, whether it's prison or a mental health hospital.

She might be frightening, but she's an old lady and physically there's no match.

Tell her to fuck off in Welsh.
