Reading and homework in reception

I have a 4 year old in reception. August birthday so one of the youngest.
She is doing fine in school according to the teacher and is meeting the targets.
Each week she comes home with 1 or 2 reading books and about 6 homework worksheets.
We are expected to read each book right through 2 or 3 times in the week.

My child isn't particularly keen on doing either the homework or the reading. She can do it without too much trouble - needs a few pointers but is capable. But just doesn't want to. Some days refuses altogether. On a good day will do a reasonable chunk. Takes 5-10 minutes to do each worksheet

I feel like this stuff is hanging over me all week, I have a younger child as well and the usual work and household chores etc. Its a battle trying to get it done each week getting it out every evening.

What do other parents do with their 4 year olds? How much reading, how much homework?

Regional city here. Bug club/education city subs from beginning of YR. One paper book per week for practice and one to share with family. We've been heavy readers since birth (30min/night every night) and DD has taken reading head-on and completed about 70 books since YR start (8 page phonics books).

We build it into the day as they're in ASC till 18.00 every day. We coupled reading completion with subsequent fun activities. DS (3 soon) participates and we alternate who reads (DS points and says nouns that he knows).

DD and DS are very different and the schedule will adjust when DS enters YR.

I can't imagine what the worksheets are, unless some YR pupils like those in the place of books (do they cover the concepts?)

Have a nice SUN.

Is your child in an ‘Oustanding’ school?
I’ve noticed that they load a lot of homework onto families.

Do what YOU feel is reasonable for your child but any forcing will definitely put the child off loving to learn. Tell the school it is just too much.

My dd's school is outstanding and recently inspected. I think the work that they give is very fair. Their early years provision (ie reception year) was absolutely fantastic. The teachers were very aware of what the kids were capable of and challenged them accordingly but they also worked very hard to adapt to the kid's needs and focus on them settling in. Behaviour management seemed excellent and child-centred.

Not all Outstanding schools are the same just as not all inadequate schools are. From my experience if you're using Osfted to decide about a school application it really helps to read between the lines. The first paragraph in which they describe the school is especially telling. It's also really important to talk to other parents to see what they really think of the school and visit the school. You can't really generalise

Six worksheets is over the top surely. For the reading it is actually easier to do it every day and ingrain it into your routine. We do a little bit every night before I read a bedtime story. It gets a little easier when they progress a bit further and it becomes less tiring for them. Also the reading books get more interesting!
