Primary co-ed indie school in NW London

Dear All,
Like many of you before we've started to search for a primary school for our children (daughter to start Sep 25 and son to follow 2 yrs after). We're based in West Hendon so looking at anything in the adjacent areas (Hampstead, Highgate, Mill Hill, obviously Hendon too). Our pre-defined criteria are:

  • independent, co-ed and with no religious associations (regardless of how good those schools may be)
  • whilst we're keen on academic performance and aiming for grammar or top secondary indie school, hence outcomes are important, at this stage we would value friendly and nurturing environment, keen to avoid places with rat race, full of tiger parents and obsessed leadership
  • keen on good international mix of children, I would like to avoid places where one cultural/racial group predominates, just looking for a healthy mix
  • some preference will be for school that has 3+ pre-reception )starting at 2 would be even better given our younger son)

I visited Heathside School in Hampstead which made a really good impression on me, though I have some concerns around really tiny space they occupy. Others on my list to visit are:

  • Devonshire House School
  • North Bridge Schoold West Hampstead/Hampstead
  • Hampstead Hill - they give me bad vibes though, unlikely to be able to organize open day before intake (haha!)
  • Mulberry House
  • Southbank International School, Hampstead Campus
  • Hendon Prep School
  • Highgate Primary (though they do not have 3+ classes)

Are there any other schools in the area that I should look at? Or perhaps some of you have some personal experiences with the ones on my list? Whilst I appreciate ultimate choice would be down to our feelings, perceptions along with some logistic factors, I'm keen to see quite a few schools to benchmark my expectations and observations as neither myself nor my partner were educated in the UK hence completely new to the system.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ivy House in Golders hill (was st Anthony’s) and starts at 2. A family member is there and they are very happy with it.
Goodwyh in Mill Hill and Grimsdell and Manor Lodge I would look at too

My DC is in one of the schools mentioned.

For the schools that are pre prep it's worth looking closely at where the kids go at 4+ , 7+ and 11+.

also worth chatting to parents if you know any at the schools.

I wasn't keen on the school DC is in at first but very very very happy with it now. It took a bit of time for me to understand why places were sought after.

The schools you mentioned don't have the same educational ethos so worth checking that out too to see what you are happy it. Some are old school, some are more play based, some have outside space others don't etc.

Thank you so much for your insight. As for educational ethos-would you be able to elaborate further? What do you mean by that? whilst browsing the offers I feel they all come up with waffle of nurturing, supportive, academically driven etc what should I look at? One thing I noticed is approach to assessments. What would be other criteria?
would you feel comfortable writing (could be as a DM) which school did you choose?
thank you!

The Northbridge Prep site in Camden meets lots of your criteria (starts at 4 though)

Particularly the diverse International aspect. Almost all the children in my sons' class have at least one international parent if not two - and it's absolutely not mono-ethnic

Brilliant, I will certainly have a look, although their West Hampstead branch may be better commute. Many thanks!

I know parents who took their kids out of Goodwyn and Ivy House. If you’re looking for a school that is dominated by one race then strike Hendon Prep off your list.

Academics is hard to measure at prep/primary as sometimes the parents take on a lot of work/private tuition to help get their kids in to the top 11+ schools. Aim for through schools if you can to avoid 11+ mayhem I.e Highgate (not really pastoral but highly academic). Grimsdell (Mill Hill Prep) they then go on to Belmont. (You will probably want to move on after Belmont to somewhere more academic. However Belmont is good for a sporty child. Devonshire House is highly sort so if you have the funds then why not.

Hello,
Which school did you choose?
we will relocate in London soon so we need to choose a international school.
I am thinking of Hendon Prep / North Bridge and Clifton Lodge..Can you give any advice.
Thanks

Hi,
I visited the following schools-Heathside School, NB West Hampstead, Devonshire School and Hendon Prep. A/w viewing in Hampstead Hill in Autumn. Cancelled at Mulberry House as I'm really looking for sth with option to go beyond 7+.
I didn't like Devonshire, because it's massive, loud, overcrowded and felt like a corpo money making machine. I had a good vibe in NB West Hampstead, great head, small, great and brand new infrastructure, they quite relaxed when pushing children academically which in all fairness I think at the age 2/3+ is fine, though I'm not sure I want to pay excess of 7k/term for glorified nursery. Hendon Prep was definitely not something I was looking for.
We chose Heathside School because for us it had it all, quite small, smallest number of children in the class, great balance between academia and other stuff (in particular time outdoor, music, sports). Really great vibes from the Head and teacher and for us great commute too.
Bear in mind these are only impressions from open days. Our child is yet to start, though I feel I did my leg work well researching schools and will be surprised if it wasn't great choice.
Good luck with your relocation!

My children are at Ivy House and it’s brilliant, fantastic Head and staff behind him fully.

the best advice : go and visit the schools.

preppingforlife · 23/03/2024 19:53

The commute from where you are to Hampstead or Highgate is going to be an absolute nightmare

Intubia · 24/03/2024 10:59

We're looking to relocate in the coming years so hopefully that will take the edge from commute. Sadly, no better options closer to us atm

Hi, I read Hendon Prep was off the list for some of you. Could you please tell why? it's very close to us so in my list of indie schools for my daughter who will be starting reception next year, but would love to get some insight from others too. tia, xx

Hello, I'm moving back to London and looking for a private school for my three DCs. I need somewhere nice, with kind teachers, diverse students and staff and good teaching standards. We're moving to North London and I've seen this school pop up - MAPLE WALK PRIMARY SCHOOL North London NW10. It looks nice on screen, but something about it seems 'off'. I can get lots of info about other primary preps but not much on this one. What's the head like? Are they trustworthy or fake? The teachers? The environment? I need a school where my kids can blend in and feel accepted, so diversity means a lot. The school is in a diverse area, but I'm not sure if that translates to being welcoming. I've been warned that some schools have nice pics and then they quietly sideline/ignore your kids or your kids mysteriously never get chosen for anything or never appear in the school news etc. I have no problem at all if some schools prefer to have a non-diverse cohort - parents need to feel happy about where they're sending their kids and should have a choice. I just don't want my kids to end up in a school like that. If there are any parents whose kids attend the school or knows of it, please let me know!

jojo231 · 16/11/2024 16:19

Hi @AlfredPrufrockwaslucky, I am too looking for such a school for my daughter who will start reception next year. I visited few schools and found Hendon Prep School very much matching to our criteria. It seemed quite academic too. Quite Diverse and Inclusive. They even mention it in their aim and ethos about 'Stretch, Diversity and inclusion'. I dont have a real experience there yet, but so far I have found it to be the best one if academics (including preparing for 11+) and diversity is important.

AlfredPrufrockwaslucky · 19/11/2024 13:12

@jojo231 Thank you very much for the advice, is it a good mix? Not dominated by one race? We will be buying a home around Queens Park and I wanted a school that was closer but I shall still check out Hendon Prep when I fly over in a coupe of months. I hope their pastoral care is good especially in reception as that's where we'll be starting. If it is, the journey won't ebe too bad.

jojo231 · 19/11/2024 23:21

Hi @AlfredPrufrockwaslucky, It would be best to attend their open session. I have heard good things about the school, online and from someone in my neighbourhood - but her kids are older.
My daughter would be starting reception next year.

Please update me too if you get to know about any other good private school which matches the 'Academic, good pastoral care, and diverse' criteria.

You need to visit Ivy House - my two children are there and they are thriving. A brilliant academic ethos with a focus on the Arts and Sports.

SJa1 · 16/12/2024 11:57

Our child is at Heathside and he absolutely loves the school and we do too. It’s such a happy school. Each child is really valued. The teachers are so warm and kind. Although there is not a lot of space in the playground they go to the Heath very regularly. We are so pleased we found this school and our son is so happy and thriving.

Tubetrain · 18/12/2024 17:54

Heathside has a really good reputation, after the disasters of 10y or so ago when the old head left.

Hi there. We are considering Ivy House. Does it prepare for the 4+?
How does it compare to Clowns and Mulberry and HH?
