Quick admissions question- moving from an all through primary to a junior school for year 3

For various reasons we're not thrilled with DD2's current primary school (we relocated back to the area at the start of the school year from overseas). There's a Junior school nearby that we think would be a better fit. I've been in touch with the school and they have said to apply in the Pan-London admissions process with the deadline next week as she'll be going into year 3 next year. Fine.

If we apply to that school and are given a place are we then automatically removed from roll at the current primary? We did look at the school quite some time ago for DC1 but would want another look before making a final decision and that might not be possible before the deadline.

Argh, it is a bit of a rush, I thought we'd be doing an in-year application later in the year. I suppose we could just withdraw if we change our mind but I don't know if the current school are informed.

I presume you wouldn't be taken off roll until you told your current school you were leaving. In the same way as when you are on the waiting list for a school and get offered a space, but you can turn it down and stay where you are if you prefer.

I would apply and then try to visit again.

The previous poster is correct. They cannot take remove your daughter's place at her current school just because she has been offered a place elsewhere.

Thanks both, that obviously makes sense just had a brief panic! Not really familiar with the infant/junior setup.

If you can’t arrange a visit before the application deadline on 15 January, try to visit and decide well in advance of primary national offer day on 16 April. If you decide not to move your child it would potentially reduce stress for other applicants if you withdrew your application or turned down the place promptly (if offered).

Yes don't worry we will, it's just not possible before the deadline on Monday.

We had this in a slightly different circumstance. I moved and the new house was between an all through primary and separate infants/juniors. By the deadline in year 2 neither had a place (he was still at school near old house) so applied to the juniors, then typically got a place at the all through school about a week later. I left the application in case we didn't like the primary (and I couldn't work out how to withdraw) and just rejected when we got the place and he stayed at the all through primary.
