Not sure if this is something that is of concern or not but am concerned as DD, 6 years old, year 2, has problems with spelling (or is this normal?)
She seems to ok with reading and maths and a keen interest in other subjects but spelling and writing seem to a struggle.
She doesn't enjoy writing and to get her doing it is like pulling teeth. We practice spellings almost every day and she eventually gets them right - great.
BUT if you ask her to spell them a couple of days later or use them in an actual sentence there wrong again - even very simple words such as how and you sometimes. It just seems such a pointless exercise to keep ploughing through lists of spellings if she can't use them correctly in or after repeated practice for them not to stick.
Could this be dyslexia as there is a family history of it?
Does anyone have any advice or better knowledge?

You isnt a very easy word.
Are you practising phonetically?
So
h-ow

Dd 1 only ever needed to practice in school. Dd2 struggles much more.
It probably is easiest to spend only maybe 15min a week on spellings. And use any other wasted time doing more reading.
Strategies for spelling
Look cover write etc
There are some spelling apps too.

Sometimes it’s not what ur doing but how ur doing that can make a difference. If one style doesn’t work, try next. Eg try doing spelling verbally, or on paper or via play eg cafe role play taking orders setting menu, or do spell game apps like night zookeeper. Teaching is a lot about reaching the child rather than one stick to all

We had very similar concerns in year 2 - struggled with spelling and writing but strong in reading/comprehension and maths. Worked closely with the teacher to monitor it for the rest of that term and in year 3 (helpfully was same teacher) alongside trying different interventions. Also had some great advice on here about it, particularly that being a strong reader didn’t mean she couldn’t be dyslexic. School agreed was worth getting her tested towards end of year 3 (we had to pay for this privately) and she was diagnosed. Equally could just be age related but worth monitoring.
