The Spinney Primary School and Mayfield Primary School Cambridge?

We are moving to Cambridge and I am currently leaning towards moving close to The Spinney Primary School or Mayfield Primary School Cambridge.

I like the Spinney's focus on inclusivity and as it seems academically strong. On the other hand, I like Mayfield as I hear children learn sign language and its very strong in reading and helping children with any other special needs.

Please share your thoughts with me on your experiences with both schools.

I have a child at Mayfield and we love it. Where will you be living? You don't want a long commute to school. Traffic is awful.

That’s really great to hear. What would you say are things the school does well?

We would be moving close to either school. Is Mayfield a place where children get a lot of extra support to catch up with peers?

We are moving from Scotland, and my son is in year 1 but his level of reading is actually reception level as Scotland doesn’t have Reception. Do you think he would be get support to catch up?

A colleague has three children at Spinney. They love it. However, the school are currently being subjected to the local Ofsted torment of an IEB set of governors and interim head. The parents are trying to avoid the school joining an academy trust. This exact same happened at a primary my DC attended. Generally, there is little impact on the kids during these interregnums but there are relatively few primary schools that are academies locally so parents - rightly - try to avoid this. In our primary it was failed Ofsted whilst we had temporary head - it was safeguarding but totally false and engineered by LA/Ofsted.

Mayfield is very inclusive, is a lovely friendly community, has fantastic grounds. Its a pretty diverse community with children arriving from all over the world. They'll help your child catch up (all schools will). Speak to the council to find out if your chosen schools have places before you sign on a house. Good luck!

Hi @MORKNEY! Just wondered if you moved/decided which school to put your DC in? We’re contemplating moving to Cambridge& looking around the same areas too!

If you are able to look further ahead, Mayfield catchment is also catchment for Chesterton which is a very good secondary school. CB4 is a nice community too.
