DD (Y3) is very behind in writing. She was previously very behind in all areas but we have been focussing on a little maths and reading every day and she’s at the working towards level for both now and is close to expected. She is adopted so our focus has very much been on self regulation and emotional well-being but her improvement at school
has really boosted her confidence so I’m keen to help with writing too.

Can anyone advise? We did the whole reading eggs programme but it’s physically writing that’s hard as well as grammar, punctuation and spelling etc.

thanks

I would maybe use Christmas to do some contextual writing?

letter from an elf who’s used no full stops / capital letters / misspellings and she has to correct it for him

write out a gingerbread recipe together as you make it

shopping lists

place names fir the table settings

have writing station somewhere accessible at home with gift tags, envelopes, post its etc to use

(apologies if these aren’t the type of ideas you wanted or are already obvious to you, just things I have used with more reluctant writers)

Thank you they are great ideas and sound a lot of fun. I had thought of ploughing through the CPG books but it caused so much upset before that I thought something like night zookeeper might be more engaging. Your ideas are even better, you’ve really helped me out, sometimes you can’t see the wood for the trees!
