Blending letters help!

In all honesty, why is it so hard? Please tell me how to make my reception year old kid to blend the letters and read simple CVC words? It’s driving me mad and I have zero capacity left.

She knows many letters like s,a,p,t,d,g,i,o etc. and recognises and says their sound quickly.

But when I ask her to read the word Cat, sad, bad, cot, tip, dot etc. she doesn’t get it!!!!

Helppppp

Thanks everyone for your reassurance, ideas and help!

Its amazing how it’s possible a bunch of strangers to put your mind at ease so quickly!

I don’t think that she can do the verbal where is your “h-a-t” and we will start from that, no letters in front of her!

Also, yes to reading eggs, we will try that too!

Honestly thank you all for invaluable help and suggestions x

Maybe she hasn't had enough experience of phonemes/sounds. It's important to 'hear' the sound and recognise it. It's a scientific process that will be completely wrecked by forcing it. The teacher will likely be letting you know when your dc will be blending. It's an abstract concept so you have to see that s/a/t said with increasing blending will make the word sound
'sat'. Watch a teaching video demonstrating introducing satpin blends. The stage before is phonological awareness and it's really crucial all that is in place pre blending. Some children don't learn phonics but do learn whole word approach starting with common words.

DD's teacher told us to start loudly and get quieter as you sound out. I haven't explained that brilliantly but it was far easier than saying each sound the same.

She sounds like she's doing absolutely fine! Just make sure that when you model letter sounds, you don't put an 'uh' sound after it, as that can make blending harder. So, P is 'p', not 'puh'. Otherwise they'll try to say eg. P-I-N as puh-in-nuh.
