KS1 SATs score

Evenimg :) Would anyone know if schools are obliged to tell parents their child’s Y2 SATs scores if asked? I know they aren’t obligated to give them out as a matter of course but the DofE website is contradictory in the guidelines it give to schools in their ‘Primary schools accountability technical guide 2023’ vs ‘Information for Parents for National Curriculum Assesments at the end of Key Stage 1’ . The former says schools should not share the scores with parents whilst the parent’s information doc states they need to tell the parents if asked. I’ve asked our school for my children’s scores and have been told that the school does not share them so am a bit confused and wondering if I can challenge them on this point? Sorry for the boring post and grateful for any information from those more knowledgeable on this :)

I can't answer your question on whether they are obliged to, but our school gave the scores in the end of year report. Hope you get some helpful answers!

The first document, Primary schools accountability technical guide 2023, is talking about progress measures from KS1 to KS2 and that those should not be shared with parents.

The second, Information for Parents for National Curriculum Assesments at the end of Key Stage 1, says that you can request your child's KS1 test scores, not that schools need to provide them. In my experience, most schools give the scores if requested but the wording here may be why your child's school is interpreting it as optional rather than compulsory.

I would say, though, that a child's KS1 test scores do not, in and of themselves, determine anything. Unlike at KS2, the scores are merely to inform the overall teacher assessment, which is your child's official grade. That's why they are just marked by the class teacher and can be sat in loose groups spread across May rather than the stricter test conditiions of KS2. Whether a child's test score is higher than, lower than ir matches the teacher assessment doesn't make a difference, really.

You really don’t need to know these. They don’t matter in the slightest. Don’t worry about it.

Thanks all. Appreciate giving me some perspective here.

I think we got them in their end of year report but we already knew what to expect from teacher assessments and parents evenings throughout the year.

We were given the scores at parents evening just after the test in July this year. It helped us understanding where DS is performing well and where we an help him more.

DS scored 100% in the math SAT. The teacher was completely oblivious to his math ability before the test because he is so shy and never sticks up his hand and now he has been moved to top set and the teacher spends a bit more time with him because he now knows that he is super shy.
