Times tables rock stars

For those of you whose children use ttrs what speed do the school expect them to get to?

My daughter has a studio speed of 2.8 seconds which I think is perfectly fine! However teacher has told me she needs to improve it to around 1.5 seconds. A lot of the girls in her class are sub 1 second which to be honest I think is crazy!

I personally disagree with the teacher but wanted to know what your schools expect? Thanks!

In 10 years time I wont employ anyone who wasn’t sub 1.5 seconds on times table rockstars in Y4.

My eldest son was phenomenal at TT rockstars. His highest score was .44 of a second ( year five )
He is amazing at maths though and incredibly talented.

Once, his teacher asked him to do it in front of everyone. They never asked him again!

Just picking up this thread again as DC has just started TTRS. The studio speed seems completely pointless if you have to only get one question correct to register a score. Or am I missing something?

Legomania · 29/09/2024 09:42

@boating32 your speed is number of correct answers/minute

boating32 · 30/09/2024 09:22

I have just found the answer to this and its average speed per question but the number of questions you need to answer correctly to register a score increases as you move up the scale.

I wouldn't worry too much as unless your 7yr old can touch type, speeds entered on a keyboard will be much lower than their "actual" speed.
My DD used to play it on a tablet at home but then have to practise in school on a regular keyboard. Her scores were always much lower at school because her keyboard skills weren't good enough. Also if your keyboard skills aren't great it's much easier to type the wrong number on a keyboard! She used to hate doing it at school for this reason as she'd quite often miss the correct number by '1' (she was using the top row of the keyboard) and it would affect her score that way too.

Mine is now in Y5 so we aren't doing it anymore, but last year she was obsessively trying to get her speed down to under 1 second as some of her friends were and she is super competitive. Anyway, she did eventually do it once she started doing it on an ipad rather than a PC keyboard. It seems to be more about typing speed than times tables knowledge at that point. I am very relieved we are no longer doing it.

My son did 11s only. Quicker to type and got his studio speed down. Completely pointless though and thankfully not used in Y5. Now got to do it all again with DD in Y2. Luckily she’s not so competitive so we’ll settle for learning g her tables.

  • Getting consistently below 3s (Rock Star) is about fluency.
  • Getting consistently below 2s (Rock Legend) is about touch typing.
  • Getting consistently below 1s (Rock Hero) is about multi-tasking - keying in the answer to the current question while reading the preview of the next question.

I think TTRS got it right - Rock Star (consistently under 3s) is a good target.

I’m sure I read that they’d block certain tables if they were being over practiced to manipulate speed, to avoid this.

are people aware you can say the answer if your device has a mic? No good in a busy classroom but at home it works and minimises the touch typing element.

Hi there! 2.8 is still pretty good. My daughter (Leah Genesis or Rosalie) has a studio speed of 0.84, and she's a fifth grader (year 6) Her latest studio game has 82 points (which is her record). She first became a headliner at 3.02 when she was seven, then became a rock legend before her classmate hacked her, so she became a Rock Star at 2.99. After that, she got to 0.89 until today, where she reacher 0.84. All I need to know is her age. If she is year 1/2 (prek and 1st grade) , she needs to get to 3 seconds (the auto recall stage). If she is in year 3/ early y4 (2nd and 3rd grade), the slowest should be around 2 seconds. year 4/year 5 is 1.5 seconds, while in year6 you should be a fast Rock Legend or a Rock Hero (1.4 secs and higher). Hope this helps!
