School place reassurance

Id appreciate any advice. I need to apply for a primary school place for 2024 for my child by January. Earlier in the year I left my home due to domestic abuse and have moved in with my parents (SS were involved). My house is for sale but in a different LA about 15 miles away. I have no plans to return to that area and when the house finally sells I’ll be looking to move close to my parents. Realistically, I’ll probably live with them for a couple of years to boost any house deposit while interest rates come down.

I have updated all mine and my child’s address details on everything I can think of but the household bills and council tax remain in my parents names although I am on the electoral role there. Will this cause problems for me getting a local school place? I’ve seen a few posts about people trying to gain school places fraudulently by using a parents address but that’s not the case for me as I genuinely live there. Can anyone who has been in a similar situation offer reassurance? 🙏

The LEA can't prove that you don't live with your parents because you do live with them.

Plenty of people will be in the same situation. Multi-generational living has always been popular in some cultures and I would say it's going to become more so!

Sorry you've been through all that. I would ring admissions and see what they suggest.

Can you also go on the council tax? When I applied for a senior school place I had to enter my council tax number as proof of address.

As above, please don't worry as you genuinely do live with your parents, so can't be proved to be lying. The only people who need worry about such things are those who do lie, as it can and will be proved. Your situation is sadly not unusual and will be one which admissions are more than use to dealing with. It doesn't matter where you use to live, all that matters for the sake of the application is the here and now.

@Stuckmomma This is what my LA wants if parents have split. The greater difficulty is the letter from both parents. They also assume domestic abuse cases go to refuges.

Ensure Dc is enrolled at a doctors surgery. Get your benefits and child benefit payable to you at your parents’ address. Ask your Admissions team what is needed in your LA. This situation won’t be the first and they might have a suggestion over the Council tax and letter issues if they exist for you. They may not.

Thanks all for your kind responses. I called the admissions line today and they have given me a list of alternative evidence I can use along with my parents council tax bill and a statement from them.
