Practice SATS results

My dc4 is in year 6 and has moderate learning disability. Before school the health visitor used to do a SOG (I think it means standards of growth) test on him every few months which was really good and specific. So we would know he was 4 months behind in his physical development and 3 months behind in emotional development etc. Since he started primary school it's all been very vague and we just get told he is working towards expectations.

Anyway, we got his first lot of practice SATs results today and we were told he was 1 Mark off passing his reading, 3 marks off passing his SPAG (although the grammar part was better than the spelling) and 5 marks off passing his maths. That's with the help of a scribe and sitting in a separate room to the others. The teacher was quite enthusiastic about his results but I'm not sure what they mean. Is the pass mark what the bang on average child should get or is everyone expected to pass or only the very intelligent children. I remember my 3rd son got around 110 for everything but I can't remember what the pass mark was.

"A scaled score between 80 and 100 means that a child is working towards the national expectation. A scaled score of 100 means that a child has met the national expectation. A scaled score of 110 or above is classed as working at a higher standard"

104/105 is the average depending on year and subject

Those marks seem pretty good at this point. As if its a full maths paper i assume they havent covered everything yet.

100 is expected, 110 is exceeding. Average is usually around 103/104. Only a few marks off at this point in the year suggests he will probably ‘pass’ (expected standard) in May, ie he is where he should be. Good news!

Brilliant, thankyou. When he was a baby he was so delayed and didn't even sit up on his own until 16 months old. I never imagined he would be doing so well now.

About 80% pass each paper.

Importantly for the school, he is on track to pass. Probably not even scrape it, but a good pass. As he's so close this early in the year, he probably won't be put in interventions to push him to the pass mark. He should get there without them.

Importantly for him, a pass in Year 6 suggests he's in the majority that are doing ok, not the minority who really struggle. This means he can read, write and calculate well enough that he will cope with the demands of secondary school curriculum, as well as to be able to access jobs that require these skills when he is older, to do things like cooking and manage his finances successfully.

He's doing really well 💪
