Use food. Count out two smarties or haribos at a time. Or if you are good and halthy use raisins.

spudmasher · 08/03/2008 21:31

Healthy. Can't type this evening.

LIZS · 08/03/2008 21:32

Can she count in twos yet? Perhaps use coins, counters , go up stairs in twos. Sing them or have a look at Woodlands Junior website as they have some good games on the Maths page

dinny · 08/03/2008 21:33

oooh, good idea, thanks.

God, I would be a rubbish teacher!

Get a pack of cards and turn them over one at a time to practise them. Time her, can she bet her previous time? (take out Jack, queen, king, and only use 1/2suites to stop it gong on for ever if necessary)

Do them as word problems e.g. 4 rabbits, how many ears?

Play a board game using a dice, every time you throw move double the number.

dinny · 08/03/2008 21:34

LIZS, hello, yes, she can count in twos

the prob is you just can't tell her ANYTHING, she argues everything you say is wrong!

bad parent alert - dh was 25 mins late for picking her up from ballet! I was having a lie-in and he got the finish time mixed up! dd unphased, was with Miss T !

We have a really funny video for times tables. Dont think it was originally meant to be funny. All the tables are done to songs from the 1980/90's. For example Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla ice - is the 2 times table. My DS loves it.

Is there a song DD really, really likes? Have fun by trying to fit the 2 times table in with the tune.

My DS is year 6 and has finally agreed the only way to learn tables properly is parrot fashion - boring - but true.

dinny · 08/03/2008 21:56

she LOVES American Boy by Estelle.... hmmmmm

no I know this one who was waiting (often seems to be tbh ) There was another when we first arrived though but she left fairly soon.

seeker · 09/03/2008 07:42

Can I add a plea about the times tables work?

When you're practising remember to say 2 lots of 2 are 4, or 2 times 2 is 4, (or just someting to get the "times-ing bit into their head)

My ds learnt to count in 2s,5s,10s or whatever, but didn't actually learn the little sums. This means that even now, at 12, she sometimes has to count up ("what's 9 times 5?" "5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45 - 45!") and it's so time consuming and frustrating!

Tips for learning? Bribery every time.

handsomeharrysmum · 09/03/2008 08:50

seeker is spot on, get them used to saying 2 x * is...not just counting up in two's the children who learnt this way can answer table questions in class so much quicker and more accuratley.

dinny · 09/03/2008 08:52

thank you! yes, she can count up in twos but is totally resistant to learning the tables "2 x 2"

think am going to buy some Smarties later!

OP posts:
dinny · 09/03/2008 08:53

so, you say:

one times two is two
two times two is four
three times... etc?

or the other way round?

OP posts:
seeker · 09/03/2008 09:11

Both ways round. And talk about "groups of" and "lots of" so that she gets an idea of the concept. And talk about it in practical terms too "If you have two smarties and I have two smarties and daddy has two smarties how many smarites all together? It's 3 lots of 2 smarties isn't it?"

Can you tell I think I did this wrong with dd?

Ds can hardly eat his dinner without me saying "Oh look, you've got 3 fish fingers and your sister has 3 fish fingers - how many is that all together?"

dinny · 11/03/2008 08:52

update: dd recited it in school correctly and gets s special mention in assembly. thanks for the tips, the raisins worked a treat!

OP posts:
seeker · 11/03/2008 19:11

RAISINS???????????!

I demand to speak to minidinny at ONCE!

It's smarties or nothing!

dinny · 12/03/2008 09:56

lol, Seeker, I bought Smarties but thought would give raisins a try first and they LOVED it... Smarties still sitting in the fridge.....

OP posts:
seeker · 12/03/2008 11:05

Admit it, you've brainwashed them. "Repeat after me -Raisins are nicer than chocolate Raisins are nicer than chocolate Raisins are nicer than chocolate.........."

Blu · 12/03/2008 11:49

We do it in the car.

Or he teaches his stuffed animals. Does quizzes with them.
