Is my daughter dyslexic??

My daughter is a summer born year 5.. she is really struggling with handwriting and spelling
Her handwriting is pretty illegible and her spelling age in 18 months below her actual age
Reading is fine as is her Maths

Ar the end of year 3 we did a in school assessment for dyslexia assessment which didnt flag anything but I really do wonder if she is dyslexic

Tonight she was writing the word menu - and spelt it meun and didnt notice her mistake until I pointed it out... this happens a lot in her writing especially at the ends of words

Does this sound like a dyslexia red flag... should I be seeking further help and a private dyslexia screening....

thank you

It's worth getting her assessed. My son is dyslexic and really struggles with spelling and handwriting. He often muddles letters up, can't copy things down, can spell individual words but struggles when writing, spelling and punctuating at the same time (poor working memory). He also struggles with time.

My advice would be to spend your money on tutoring instead of a dyslexia assessment. The advice on what to do to support with spelling will be the same if she has a diagnosis of dyslexia or not.

would you get a tutor now for KS2 and the Sats or wait until secondary

My dd, also year 5, was diagnosed a couple of years ago. Her spelling is "creative" commonly skipping out letters/syllables. She will also write things like prak (park). We found her dyslexia assessment results really interesting, and useful to refer back to.

We haven't tried tutoring, largely because she is so mentally tired after school that I'm not convinced how much it will help!

Just to add, we too found the assessment report really useful in terms of how best to help our son. We have also had a dyslexia specialist tutor since year 3 (now year 6) and she's been worth her weight in gold. She has taught him how to decode words, how to break spellings down, lots of rules and tips for remembering spellings and, above all else, has filled him with so much confidence. Good luck, whatever you decide to do xx

I disagree with this. I'd get her privately assessed by a reputable Ed Psych. Dyslexia is actually quite a broad term and a good, thorough report will identify the particular areas of weakness, as well as her strengths, and give strategies which you can pass on to her school and work on at home together.
