Year 2 writing

DD is summer-born and in year 2. Her reading and maths are excellent but her writing is not at the same level. Any suggestions on how I could support this at home? I dutifully get her to write her reading journal (sample attached) but it's always a bit of a slog for her (the attached took a painful 45 minutes).

What do you think is wrong with the writing?

TenisslfL · 19/10/2023 21:01

Stop joining the capitals.
Maybe a bit small

Lancasterel · 19/10/2023 21:03

Year 2!! That’s fantastic!

UpUpUpU · 19/10/2023 21:06

Is this a stealth brag??

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 19/10/2023 21:08

Fucking hell. I would be dancing round the lounge if my year 2 girl wrote like that! She does have suspected dyslexia but honestly your child's writing is already way above most of the year 2 writing (seen it on the boards in the classroom) I have seen. I have attached my child's where she is practising her spellings.

Ditch the reading journal and get her to write something fun

Is this a stealth brag??

Surely yes!

Misspacorabanne · 19/10/2023 21:28

Year 2??? Do kids really learn to join up in year two? I don’t think I did until about year 4! I might be wrong as obviously hell of a long time ago!

ShipshapeShore · 19/10/2023 21:29

This is more than ok for year 2, I wonder where you've got the idea it isn't? I am a Year 3 TA and most of my class couldn't write like this.

Is this a stealth brag??

Of course it is! Honestly no one with any experience of children could think that was poor writing.

lavenderlou · 19/10/2023 21:42

I teach year 2 and would be delighted if any of my class wrote this well. It takes some of them 45 minutes to produce 3 sentences.

Ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyourbiscuit · 19/10/2023 21:44

I hate a stealth brag

BethTalk2thehandpodcast · 19/10/2023 21:47

I teach Year 3 and this handwriting would be in the top third of my class. If this post is genuine, my honest advice is for you to relax and step back a little.

TheBigTVonWheels · 19/10/2023 22:03

It's not a "stealth brag" - I don't actually know what the writing of the other kids looks like, as I've not been into her classroom this year. I don't think hers is awful, just that her writing is a bit messy and she doesn't use very varied sentence structures etc. I don't expect her teacher to focus her time on an already able child, so I want to support DD at home to do as well as she possibly can.

You think her writing is messy? I mean honestly you don't need to have seen her peers writing to know surely that it's not messy.

Her writing is fabulous for a child who has just started year 2. Her writing is fabulous for her age and you really need to chill out or she's likely to stop writing altogether.

SkankingWombat · 19/10/2023 22:12

What do you think the writing of a yr2 pupil should look like OP?
I agree it's very neat and already much in advance of expected levels. Why would she need to be doing more at home? Presumably she is progressing nicely on her 'line on the graph'? School will still be stretching and challenging her to improve further. Your time would be better spent on areas she actually struggles with or things which broaden her learning. How are her gross motor skills? Does she have a subject of special interest you can get lost in together?

NerrSnerr · 19/10/2023 22:12

I would stop making her write this much at home. If it takes a painful 45 minutes she's just hate doing it.

Her writing is very good (as it's likely you know).

Helloshelfy · 19/10/2023 22:27

Wow - she’s in year 2 and that’s her writing?

Does she go to a very pushy academic school? Why are you making her do writing for 45 mins in the evening?

I would stop pushing her so hard, OP. Won’t be good for her mental health.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 19/10/2023 22:37

Well I would highly recommend reading with her more. Go to the library every weekend and on days after school when the weather is appalling and you can't go to the park. Just sit and read with her in a fun and engaging way, using expression, and different voices if you're good at that sort of thing. And listen to lots of audiobooks in the car, and in place of TV. Greater exposure to literature will help with her vocabulary and sentence structure.

As for the handwriting, you can encourage her fine motor skills with drawing and painting, using chalks, play-doh, kinetic sand, threading pony-beads, making hama bead pictures, and just generally through play!

Massive stealth brag alert!!

Parakeetamol · 22/10/2023 21:24

Definite reverse. This is a post made by the year 2 pupil about her DM's writing.

NewMeNewYou · 22/10/2023 21:30

Stealth brag...bore off...

Sipperskipper · 23/10/2023 07:15

My Yr2 daughter's writing is nowhere near that level, and at parents evening they said she was working at greater depth in writing.
