Would a parent governor be expected to stand down should their child be moved school? Child moving mainstream to special school placement? Thanks

Most governing bodies require a parent to be a parent at the time of election. Given term of office is 4 years then of course that will mean you may have parent governors whose children leave the school during that time. Recruiting governors is hard enough. There are also training requirements so you want people to serve their full term if possible.

So no, the parent whose child has moved to an SEN school should not be expected to stand down before their term ends. Their lived experience (a parent of an SEN child, SEN provision at mainstream and SEN provisions, almost certainly experience of EHCNAs and EHCPs) means they will likely have a lot to contribute.

Absolutely what BountySunshine says.

What everyone else said. The only requirement is that you are a parent at the time of election. They are a representative parent, not a parent representative.

Nope and given how hard schools find it to recruit parent governors they probably don't want them to step down either.

Are you absolutely sure they're definitely a parent governor? Because they might just be a governor who also happened to be a parent of a child at the school who is no longer at the school. I'd definitely want to double check this before suggesting someone step down from a role.

Whether they are a parent governor or a governor who is a parent makes no difference. They are entitled to complete their term.
