Year 1 writing

What sort of standard is this for start of Y1? DS struggled with writing in reception so I feel I should be doing more at home. But on the other hand we have limited time so need to choose my battles.

I think that's very good!

Just to add I left him to it but helped with spelling when asked.

That's good for year 1 I'd say better than a lot I've seen from dd class

Honestly I'm surprised to read he struggled with writing in reception. In classes I've taught recently this would be amongst the best writing in the class and not at all the sign of a struggling writer.

His writing looks very good. He's using his phonics to sound out and spell words, his writing is legible, the letters are the same size, he remembered punctuation and he has finger spaces. Not sure why you're so worried.

Seems great to me.

I work in year 1. That’s very good.

Smartiepants79 · 01/10/2023 21:56

That’s not the work of a child that’s struggling with writing. That’s the handwriting, spelling and content of the top end of the expectations for this year group.
Has that been copied by him like a handwriting exercise?

smithy153 · 01/10/2023 21:57

This is all very reassuring thanks. What is the verdict on the paper with tramlines? I think it really helps with sizing but school don't use it.

We use it in handwriting books but not general writing as some chn are confused by it.

CyclingLegs · 01/10/2023 22:02

I used that kind of paper for DS and he found it useful. It may be that the school don't have the money and would be grateful for a large stack of the stuff, or you could just use it at home.

The school probably can't afford this kind of paper. It's common in handwriting books but much less so in other books.

Honestly I really don't think you need to worry about his handwriting at all even if it's not as neat when using bog standard paper.

No not copied. I am guilty of usually dictating what what to write but for this I asked him to say the sentence verbally before writing it and he asked me or looked in a book for spellings he didn't know.

I work in Y3 and that's better than a lot of children in my class!

If you want something to work on with him, I would look at sizing of capital letters - apart from his last 'I', all his capitals are the same size as smaller lowercase letters like a e s i, etc.

smithy153 · 02/10/2023 08:37

@GetTheGoodLookingGuy thanks will do. How about size? That page is A4 so the writing is pretty big. My feeling was to get the letter formation right before trying to reduce the size. Does that sound right? We don't get any guidance from school for handwriting.
