To change primary school

DD attends the local primary school. The school has had 2 ofsted inspections over the last few years, both inspections graded as Requires Improvement. Before starting Reception, I visited and asked lots of questions, was satisfied with the answers and comfortable for DD to join the school. Since starting, the follow up ofsted happened. I'm not wholly concerned about the ofsted reports,, as I know there's a lot more to schools than the ofsted rating, but I am concerned that there were a lot of areas that hadnt been addressed from the previous report and I'm concerned about my daughters progress. She's bright, really keen to learn but I feel she's not really being pushed. One issue was with reading, I've spoken to her teachers as the reading books she brought home were really easy for her. I didn't feel the teacher took me seriously, rolled her eyes at me. And the book she brought home this week, she had last year and found easy. Homework is really quite basic and she hasn't had any since going back after the summer. 7 children in her year have left the school since Reception, she's now year 2. I'm wondering if I'm over thinking things or if we should look at other schools.

Are there spaces at other schools? If you think they are going to give her a better education, and there’s space, then move her.

Bluevelvetsofa · 30/09/2023 22:53

Is she happy there or does she feel bored and not stretched?

Stokey · 30/09/2023 22:55

For the specific things you mention, I wouldn't move. My kids were always reading above their age group level so I'd just send them in with their own books. It's hard especially at Y2-3 where you'll have a wide range of kids reading abilities. Some will be still learning to read while otherwise will be reading chapter books. Personally I don't think primary age children need homework, so long as they're reading at home.

Thanks for your responses. @RudsyFarmer I know there are spaces at other schools in the area, I guess I just don't want to unsettle things and move schools if this is normal, as you say @Stokey there are big gaps between children this age.
@Bluevelvetsofa she is happy where she is to be honest, comes bouncing out of school but she has stopped reading the school books because she finds them boring.

Definitely look at other schools.
we’re done a few state schools and TBh all ‘required improvement’ even though they were rated good as did one of the private schools (but not as badly as the state)

i would ask around in your area to see if you can find a better school, you could always consider just getting a tutor or teaching it yourself?

Dylls · 30/09/2023 23:41

Thanks @underneaththeash I have tried to do extra at home with her, but it's difficult to find the time whilst juggling everything else and finances won't stretch to a private tutor unfortunately. I will do a bit more research on the other schools who appear to be performing better

I would move her. We had concerns about our DCs’ primary and my only regret is not moving them sooner. Like night and day. Can only really see how bad the first school was now we see how good the second one is.

She is happy. She can read other books than the school ones. I wouldn't move a happy child for the vague sense that she isn't being pushed.

If 7 from reception have already moved, that usually suggests there is an issue. I would definitely move - do it now before friendships are fully established.
