Could you possibly re-read and rephrase? I’m not quite sure what you mean!

Russooooo · 27/09/2023 21:47

Er…?

Anothernamechange3 · 27/09/2023 21:51

2 English groups in yr 6, getting different homework. I think op wants to know what homework the ‘higher’ set are getting. I think the best bet is to ask the teacher. I’m sure if you wanted your dc to try a bit of it at home with you it would be allowed? Apologies if that wasn’t the question…

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 27/09/2023 22:04

Sorry that wasn't clear.

The year 6 English is split into two sets.
The highest set is getting hw. What could it be?
The bottom set doesn't get hw.

Re ask the teacher... Unfortunately trying to ask anything is quite long winded and defensive by school.

Does it matter? What is your end game here?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 27/09/2023 22:08

@Dotcheck clearly the OP is concerned that her DC is being disadvantaged by differentiation in teaching and homework setting.

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 27/09/2023 22:11

Dot what's your end game?
My god. I'm staggered someone would actually make that comment take the time to make it?

I suppose it depends whether your child is being given homework and you think it’s unfair, or not in the group given homework and you think it’s unfair.

As for what it could be, it would depend on the topic.

BlueIgIoo · 27/09/2023 23:08

It could be anything. Really - there is no set English homework on the curriculum. You need to speak to the school.

Dotcheck · 27/09/2023 23:08

Staggered? Why?
Is homework really necessary for Y6? They spend so much of the year being taught to take tests. Many teachers are quite vocal on how they believe homework isn’t necessary for primary.

Dizzydeers · 27/09/2023 23:13

If you want to set homework for your son you could look at past SATS papers and work through the harder questions with him. I assume the teachers aim for for the top set to reach as high scare as possible in the SATs.

Doyoumind · 27/09/2023 23:15

Absolutely no one except the teacher/school can tell you. How can anyone else possibly know? Why not ask a parent of someone in the set? Much better chance of finding out that way than asking randoms on the internet.

DynamicK · 27/09/2023 23:21

If you feel like your dc is at a disadvantage, set your own English hw. Lots of Sats comprehension and English practice books available.
Bbcbitesize has some good stuff
Read lots with your dc, ask questions, talk about what they've read.
Watch higher level tv including documentaries. Put the subtitles on.

How on Earth could anyone on here know what the homework is?

Weird thread, badly written!

feathermucker · 28/09/2023 00:45

Why is this important to you?

Hermittrismegistus · 28/09/2023 00:56

The OP struggles to write a coherent sentence..

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 28/09/2023 06:28

@cwestyw.. Another really unhelpful post that I can't believe you would bother to write.

So a parent whose child is in a top set may be on here.
A parent whose child isn't in the top set but still gets hw may be on here.
A teacher who teaches top set maybe on here.
A teacher who doesn't teach year 6 but still knows what they may be given maybe on here?

Usually there are knowledgeable and helpful posters here unlike some of these who are being weird and obtuse.

@Hermittrismegistus the premise of this site is to be helpful.
AT ONE time due to the hideous and vicious responses on the education area it was impossible to ask questions.
It seemed like that went away and once again we could ask questions with out childish smart arse remarks and insults.
Are we back to those days.

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 28/09/2023 06:33

@DynamicK

Thank you.

I don't necessarily feel she is at a disadvantage I'm just wondering why a top set already achieving good marks I imagine is getting on top?.
Are sats spilt into higher papers?

I don't think they are?
If anything I would assume it's fhe lower set getting hw to consolidate their work?

OP posts:
cansu · 28/09/2023 06:34

It really could be anything. I used to teach year 6. My homework was either spag or reading comprehension. I imagine that the lower set are not getting it as the teacher feels they wouldn't currently benefit. If you want hwk, ask.

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 28/09/2023 06:40

@cansu but what's the rationale behind that?

Surely bottom set would benefit more?

Further to your last post OP, the above response was mine and I am a teacher. I suspect other responses were also from teachers.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 28/09/2023 07:48

I assume that all children are reading every night? Maybe the teacher wants the lower set to concentrate just on making sure that they read every night and doesn't want to add to the burden. There are loads of English workbooks you can get to supplement their learning.

This may just be personal view of the teachers teaching each set. I don't think there is anything more universal than that. Some schools have homework policies, but maybe not here.

Sirzy · 28/09/2023 07:58

Perhaps the teachers know their groups and has an idea of what will work best for them at this very early point in the year.
