school trousers for a small 3 year old

My 3 year old DGS started pre-school this term. They are attached to the primary school and the children wear the uniform - just polo shirts, jumper or sweatshirt and trousers/skirts etc. DGS is on the skinny side and his trousers, even on the smallest adjustment, do not stay up! Age 3 is the smallest size available in school trousers (bought from Tesco). Is this a common problem - he doesn't look exceptionally small in comparison to the other kids or are Tesco trousers particularly large? I could of course try to take a tuck in the waistband but not sure how successful that would be! Any suggestions?

Just put him in the appropriate colour jogging bottoms, no one will bat an eye lid.

Possibly too late for this year, but M&S start at a size 2.
They also do slim waist - which is an inch or 2 smaller, and all with adjustable waists.

Worth a look to see what you can find in the right colour.

Do they have adjustable waistbands?

PuttingDownRoots · 24/09/2023 17:06

Alternatively... buy girls ones. They are a bit skinnier and 3yos won't notice.

M&S slim fit start at age 2-3 and have an adjustable waist.

We got skinny fit from m&s with an adjustable waist this year - slimmer fitting than the slim fit and fit the waist of my tall but slim boy well once adjusted.

tiggergoesbounce · 24/09/2023 17:18

M&S do slim fit, skinny fit and super skinny it is not just a slim adjustable wait the legs are tailored a slimmer fit. They are a god send 🖕

Pre-school is very young for formal school trousers, even of they wear the sweatshirt/polo-shirt.

Do the school not allow plain dark jogging bottoms or leggings as an alternative at that age? Most pre-schools with a uniform are more relaxed when it comes to the bottom half (especially as children that age will often need changing due to toilet accidents or messy play anyway).

Our school nursery allowed joggers and leggings. Preferably black or grey, but I’m not sure they enforced the colour. I’m pretty sure all of the little boys wore joggers instead of actual school trousers

DS is very slim and we are happy with the M&S options for school trousers

MidnightOnceMore · 24/09/2023 17:49

Just wear any trousers, uniform is unnecessary at that age.

I would also recommend m&s slim fit with adjustable waist or Sainsbury's slim fit. My kids are both slim and standard fitting trousers just fall off them.

Sprogonthetyne · 24/09/2023 18:06

My DD just had black leggings for the first 6 months of nursery. No one seemed to mind, so just of for something he's comfortable in or already has in a dark colour.

Thanks for all of your helpful messages. Have just ordered M&S slim waist age 2-3. Hopefully will solve the problem and he can keep the bigger ones until he grows into them. I tend to agree about it being better to wear joggers at this age but they do all seem to be in the proper school trousers.
